Valvoline is what it comes from the factory with, it is also the only thing used at Cummins.

I run the Cummins Premium Blue Synthetic (Valvoline) in My 04.5 600 and love the stuff. Never had a usage issue and it does not give you that terrible blowby smell. 4th CTD and I would not have run anything else in any of them

I run Valvoline premium blue synthetic, since the premium blue is specific to the Cummins engine I'm very surprised at the few users that are reporting to the poll using the premium blue.

I think the reason more people aren't running Premium blue is availability. If you're not near a cummins shop, it can be hard to find. My local NAPA just started carrying(stocking) it, so I am considering the switch. On the other hand, I have been very happy with the Rotella-T synthetic blend, other than the stink for the first 200-300 miles after an oil change. My blackstone report came back excellent with 6500 miles on the oil , and this time I'll be running it to at least 8500 per Blackstones recommendation. At 6500 miles, the oil was just starting to lose some of its golden color.

Is there any scientific proof that running any particular oil is better than another brand? I hear good things about them all. I change mine every 5000 miles. Is there any reason my engine won't go a million miles changing the oil every 5000 miles running Rotella?

Some people say they don't like the "smell" of Rotella......I don't even notice it. What would make Valvoline Premium Blue or Delo or even Amsoil any better than Rotella? It sounds to me like if you just run a major brand and change it regularly..........your engine will be fine.

Is there any documented engine failures because of running brand X?

Does anybody have any comments on my questions above? Thanks for any help or advice.

It looks to me that Rotella is running number one and I have seen many engines with a millon miles that ran on it and that is all the scientific proof I need . I have also seen guys that never change thier oil with over 100000 miles and they still ran strong . I have seen a engine with no filter just a by pass line with 150000 on it still ran strong . A lot of old aircraft engines never had a filter and run for years. My 64 cessna 172 0300 engine never had a filter till I put on on it . Most guys I know run Shell oil in thier aircraft engines and some of those cost a lot more than a cummins and if they quite it may cost you more than money . I change every 5000 and have used Rotella for a long time and have never noticed the smell either . I guess what I feel is 50000 ,100000 or even 300000 is not much of a test unless you are sending a sample in for testing and can provide some proof . This war could go on for ever and with most guys trading in with under 100000 it does not make a whole lot of sense any how . Me I get a new truck every 13 years and have yet to have a engine fail and if I did I dout it would be because of the oil I use, heat is the number one cause for engine failure .

Bingo. Stick with Rotella, Delo, Valvoline Premium Blue, Mobil 1, Mobil Delvac, Amsoil, etc.....and change it every 7500 miles like the manual says and your engine will outlast your truck by far.
