what gear should i pull in?

I recently just went camping pulled a 5,500 lbs camper. On my way home my transmission seemed to be slipping at the smallest little grades. i had to pull over on the side of the road, i checked my transmission fluid and man did it smell BURNT!!!!!! A buddy of mine told me that i should not pull anything in over drive, he say's that is why my transmission fried. i am not sure if that sounds right. I do have a 6" lift and 37" tires but i also don't think that would affect it much. My Engine RPM's are running around 1650 in overdrive at 70 MPH. So my question to is should i take the overdrive off? And also what do you think caused the trans, to fry? thanks!!

I pull in OD all the time but I have stock tires and 4.10 gears. Not an issue at all and I pull 10-15000 lbs. The only time I go to OD lockout is when I may be lugging the engine. I am perty sure the 07' has a Tow/Haul mode which will change the shiftpoints. Shouldn't be an issue unless your larger tires are causing the problem.

I pull in OD all the time as well. 10-11k toyhauler. My truck is stock. I wonder if your 37" tires and bullydog have something to do with it.

If you put 37" tires on and did not change your diff gears your final drive ratio is higher making it harder on the tranny. I tow a little over 7,000 pounds, flat bed trailer, Toyota rockcrawler and all our crap with out a problem. I run on flats in OD but as soon as I start hitting hills it goes into T/H mode. I figure paying for a little more fuel is better then paying for a new tranny. My truck is stock also.

If you have 3.73 like I do with 37" tires the final drive ratio is is like 3.08. not ideal for towing any load with our big trucks. my truck tows like crap!!! I am going to have 4.56 installed in the next couple of weeks. 99.9% of my driving is city streets so they will work good for me. If your do more highway driving you would want something in the 4.10-4.30 range

Ya i have the 3.73 gears with the 37" tires. Makes sense now why the trasmission went out. Anyone know what kinda of $$$ it is to get 4.10 in the rear installed? I also i am going to go purchase ATS transmission if Dodge does not warrenty it. i will let you all know if they will warrenty it with the lift and tires installed when i get home tonight. Thanks for all the good info!!

I would suggest the lower RPM may be the issue. I don't know this specific tranny but most autos are lubricated by the input shaft. Lower RPM means lower oil flow and heat is an auto tranny killer.

I really want to know what DC says for warranty. Remember the long warranty discussion about over sized tires on this board ?? Sounds like an argument on the dealer's side.

I thought it was against the law to hire illegals to do your shifting....

well, here's the deal guys,
I went to Dodge this morning no problem with the lift and tires, it is under warrenty. BUT here is the KICKER, since i had BULLYDOG installed on the truck, warrenty out the WINDOW!!!!!!!! And Yes i did return the truck to STOCK before i took it to dodge. I don't know how, but somehow they can trace that you had bullydog installed on the truck, even if you return the truck to stock. So come to find out, it would end up costing me about 5,000 dollars for dodges same transmission. Screw that, if i am going to be paying for it, then i am installing an ATS transmission for 7,300 dollars. seems like a better and smarter choice to me, plus ATS warrenties there stuff for 3 yrs 150,000 miles. Still curious if i should swap the gears from a 3.73 to a 4.10 if i have the ATS transmission insalled?

i would still swap out the gears unless you want to run 170 mph with the 37" tires on.

and the ATS trans sounds heck of a lot better than getting a stocker put back in

They can read the ignition cycles (reset to 0) with the Bully Dog. So even by returning to stock the dealership can see you only cycled the key 1-2 times even though you have thousands of miles on the truck). They know instantly that you had a programmer.... That's why the Samrty is nice, it doesn't reset the cycles and therefore it is harder for them to see....
