What do you think happened??? (A/C Issue)

Last Friday, I started the truck, no A/C, pressed on the accelerator, still hot air. White smoke billowed out from under the hood with the smell of burned electrical wire (or slipping clutch - A/C compressor?).

Smoke went away, smell took longer. A/C worked fine after that. Yesterday it blew intermitently cold and somewhat cold.

Today it is at the dealer. They said connections, wires, charge and performance are all ok (A/C blowing at 38 degrees).

Anyone have a similar expereince or any ideas?

Sounds like the clutch on the compressor seized up for a moment, did you check the belt for damage? Also would be a good Idea to disconnect the pressure lines on the back of the compressor and check for metal shavings in the lines and the compressor.

I never had the smoke issue, nor any electrical problems. This is for anyone that owns a 2003. My truck was about 2 yrs old and it started bloing cool air then went down to warmer air. The longer the trip the warmer it got. I took it to a friend thats an excellent mechanic. He charged the system up, told me it was low to begin with, then cleaned the condenser really good. I have never had another issue since then. My A/C didn't work that good when I drove it off the lot with 12 miles on it!!!

Just guessing, but it sounds like maybe your compressor clutch was slipping due to unusually high pressure and the smoke could have been the pressure relief valve blowing off a little refrigerant.
