What cord do I need?

What cord do I need for the block heater for a 2005 2500 quad 4X4? Also what temp would be the borderline for use? Thanx...Jamie

If it wasn't ordered with the truck, you can get the cord from a Cummins parts house (cheaper) or a Dodge dealership.

I like to plug mine in on a timer for a couple hours when the temp is down in the 30's, but that's more of a luxury than a need- just defrosts sooner/runs better sooner.

I haven't actually run into a temp cold enough to cause any difficulty starting when not plugged in- but it is noisy and lots of white smoke...

That's when you should be plugging it in. Below 40F and it should be plugged in for an hour or two before starting. Longer when it's colder.

I plug in for 3 hours w/ my 10 amp timer when it gets into the 30's at night. Doing this, plus my winter front, really helps warm things up in the morn, especially when I hit the highway, i.e. higher rpms and no cold air hitting the radiator.

As was mentioned, don't go to a dealer for the cord.

My truck is in a garage every night so it only gets plugged in a few times a year. Usually when the temp in the garage is 10 degrees or colder
