Wet bearings?

I did the axle seal today on my drivers side. I was surprised to see so much oil in there. They must be wet bath bearings?

My dodge shop manual states to grease the bearings on the 11.5" rear axle. So I did this.

Was this a mistake?

Noop, you done good. It's if you didn't grease the bearings it would of not been so good.

So if the bearings are getting axle oil anyway, why the need the grease them?

The grease lubes the bearing till oil has a chance to splash into the bearing.

That's why my buddy figured too..

so the grease doesn't then pollute the axle oil? just seems wierd to me... I watched a youtube video later on about a guy doing his, and he didn't grease them..

oh well..
