Voiding warranty on 4.10 to 3.73 swap??
Voiding warranty on 4.10 to 3.73 swap??
I'm looking into buying an '06 2500 QC 4x2 with 4.10 gears that has an extra $1000 rebate and the only thing I would want done is to swap the 4.10 out with 3.73. So I asked the dealer how much it would cost to change it to 3.73 after I bought it. The dealership is located about 1.5 hours away, so I figured I would go buy the truck and leave it there to have the work done and pick it up later.
The salesperson called me back to suggest that I not do this as this will void the 36K mile drivetrain warranty. So my question is, if Dodge performs the work to swap out the gears, why is the warranty voided?? Hoping someone could shed some light on this for me.

Didn't you say in a different post that you only want that truck because of the extra $1,000 in rebates?
If so the price it would cost to change gears would knock that down quit abit, I bet it would cost you $400-$600 bucks to change gears so is it really worth all the hassle????
where do you live are you sure you want a 4x2??
I get stuck in my truck on the wet grass on my side yard when I back up to my trailer. I end up locking it in 4wheel most times(on a really small slop)
BTW if the dealer did void your warranty they could only void the axles, every thing else should still be covered. ( this dealer sounds like they are void happy
SOB's)

I guess they don't have much confidence in their service department if work they do voids the warranty! To answer your question ******, the extra $1000 rebate was the main reason for me looking into this, but another is that this is the closest I can find a truck that has what I want. There are about 3 others in the state that are possibilities but have more than I want (ie: Infinity sound system, etc). I think I'm going to look into the others, and if I can't get the deal I want, I can always just buy the one with 4.10's and leave them in (as adkl1 suggested).
I'm in the Charleston SC area (very flat) and although 4x4 would be nice to have, I don't think it's necessary for what I am planning to use it for. I will use it to tow a boat and occasionally haul tractors around on a flatbed. Plus, the price difference puts it out of my price range, even with the great rebates. Actually, the rebates are the only reason I'm getting a diesel b/c I was looking at the 1500's and F150's.
Hopefully the next time I post will be as an owner instead of a bystander!

I think the dealer is full of it. I would make him put it in writeing that if you change the gears it will void the whole power train warranty. I can see them telling you they will not warrany the new non Dodge gears but I can not see how in hell they could void the power train warranty. I would bet they will not put such in writing to you as I think they would be up a creek big time if they did.
I did the same gear swap you're talking about. I had THE DEALER do it so it WOULDN'T void my warranty. It cost alot more, but doing the kind of towing I do, I didn't think I had a choice.
I would ask higher in the dealership, or maybe try a differant dealer and see what they say.

Like someone above said, don't. I've got a 2500 with 4.10's and I wouldn't change out the gears for anything.
Its a lot of money for 200 or so rpms. You're not going to save that much, if any on fuel mileage. Go with taller tires when yours wear out.
If you do have someone change them out, don't cheap out and let a gorilla do the work. Been there done that a LONG time ago, and had to live with a howl - but boy did I save myself some money.

Well, I was all set to take the advice and go with the truck with 4.10's and not mess with it, but my arm was twisted at a local dealer with a good deal on an '07 with 3.73
(the other truck was about 3 hours away).
Before all of this when I was still looking into the gear swap, I called a different service department and they said the same thing. They were pretty upfront with me and said that it wouldn't void the whole powertrain warranty but said that Dodge might try to place blame on that modification if anything did happen. The work would be covered for 12 months or 12K miles, so I guess if warranty was a concern, it could be done a year before the factory warranty runs out.
