Vibration at 65-75mph
Vibration at 65-75mph
I'm having a vibration from 65-75mph in my truck. I've had it at two dealerships, one said it was a bent wheel (and it wasn't) and the other said this was a NORMAL problem and they had called Chrysler and there was a no fix for it. I've owned a few of these trucks and none of them did this before. Does anyone else have this vibration? This is definetly some kind of driveline vibration, not a bad tire or rim. IS this normal?

Seems hard to get much over 40k on the stock "greased for life" u-joints.......
I BET ITS TIME TO CHANGE 'EM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go to NAPA and get the greaseable ones YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED!!!
Is there ANY ANY ANY vibration between 10 and 30 MPH????????????????

None that I have noticed. If there is...it isn't near as bad as the higher speed vibration.

The best way I can describe the low speed vibration is that is like having your mobile phone in your pocket on "vibrate", if you even THINK its ringin' then 1 ujoint is GONE...................................

NAPA ujoints will have more play in them new then Spicer Originals at 50k. Get all the Ujoints replaced with Spicer Originals. You buy the Spicer's and the dealer will do the warranty install. The dealer can keep the free warranty ujoints and he will be happy and your greasable Spicer Originals will last 3 times as long. You can get a set of more expensive Tom Woods ujoints that have a lifetime warranty if you want to keep a warranty on ujoint. IF you tow heavy get a set of traction bars. The axle wrap that you get with these trucks just trashes the ujoints on the rear shaft. If you replace the ujoints and you still get a vibration then have the dealer get the shaft balanced. Mine was out a lot stock. If you get the rear shaft ujointed and balanced and you still have vibration then take off the front shaft. If this cures the vibration have the dealer replace the front axle. If the front shaft is ok then have the dealer replace the rear ring gear and pinion. If you still get a vibration check the front hub bearings and ujoints. Vibration is not normal but is a "concern" with these trucks. These lifetime ujoints are ok for a 6cylinder gasser but are on the low side of the performance scale. ks
That last post is some great information.
I have an 04.5 that has 7,000 miles on the odometer and it has the vibration from 65-75 mph. I haven't taken it into the dealer yet. The truck has had the vibe since I bought it with 5,700 miles on it.

Hey guys, has everyone forgotten the infamous "70 mph vibration"? It started on the 03's, and lasted all the way until the early 05's. This was a well known problem all over the internet at that time. It's the front driveshaft on the 4x4's-the 2wd's did not do it. My 04.5 dually did it, and I took it to the dealer. The tech was well aware of the problem, and he said that he couldn't promise that they'd get rid of it entirely. They replaced the front driveshaft with a new part number that superceded the old one, and it was gone. This is almost certainly the problem if any of you have 4x4's of that age range that have been doing this all or most of the truck's life.
In my case, it wasn't my front shaft. I removed it and still had the vibrations. Someone on here suggested using a large hose clamp and play with weights on the front of the main drive shaft (I hosed the flywheel looking thing on the front of the shaft). After about 1 month of rotating it around, adding little weights, etc., it is now 95% gone. Now, if you didn't pay attention, the vibrations are so small you won't notice.
Dealer had no clue what was wrong, so I thought my time was better wasted by myself.
Probably the best thing to do for me is to take off that heavy beast and have it balanced, now that I know where my problem is.

I just picked up my truck from the dealer which I had in for the 70 mph vib. The tech said the rear u-joint on the driveshaft was binding and replaced it. The vib is now virtually gone. I'm very happy with the results.
70 mph vibe
My 05 had the 70mph vibration, Mine sounded like a twin engine airplane. The dealer ship had me drive it without the front driveshaft, no change, replaced both drive shafts , no change. They were going to replace the transfercase. So I put the 3- 4" hose clamps on it just to try one more thing before they did that. and with over 30,000 mile since I posted this fix last year and still perfect. It completely stopped it. Couldnt believe it. Hope this helps
Can you describe the vibration? At that speed the vibration is almost certainly tire related. Driveshafts are turning 4x faster than the tires and the frequency (think buzzing) of the vibration at that speed would be very high.
