It was very thirsty
Filled my truck up for the first time on the way home from work today and man oh man, 11.9 on the calculator and 12.7 on the lie o meter. Now it may not be a good number cause I'm sure the dealer didn't fill it up as full as I did so the next one may be better or more accurate. I hope it gets a lot better, 2 of my buds say their's are doing around 17, I could live with that.

Nice red colour. I have advised many before how to get at least 2MPG increase on new trucks. And that is usually at the dealers where they are asking the same question and getting no answers at all. That is run the truck as loaded as you can (say pulling 10K+) up a long hill - in our local cases a 6-7% grade for 22miles. Now you look like you are devoid of hills so I would suggest loading her up, to an equal load, on a chassis dyno for 1/2 hour then a few minutes turbo cool then park it off for 1 hour. Don't be shy - run it hard. Come back and tell me it did not work! Every person who I have come across has thanked me. As far as I know this only works on new engines. It has worked on my 98 12v, my 03 and now my 07 5.9. The latter gets 24MPG to a US gal at about 65mph and 13MPG pulling my 14K 5er at 60mph.
Good luck.

I think it will take a lot more miles pulling a heavy load to get the engine broke in enough to make much of a difference on mileage. I have pulled my 15K, 5th-wheel camper approximately 4,000 miles and it has not made much of a difference. The truck now has 12k miles on it and I am currently getting about 15 mpg empty on the interstate running 70 mph. I am getting about 12 mpg empty in mixed town and highway driving. Towing my camper I am getting about 8 to 9 mpg at about 65 mph. Overall I am getting maybe 1 mpg better than when the truck was brand new. Pulling a heavy load hasn't helped it much.
The first tank in these trucks are all ways the worst. The truck will be thirsty until the first oil change (5000-8000 miles, lots of variable). Do the emission deletes, is this your first diesel? I have around 12000 miles on mine and I get 18-20mpg on summer fuel, no cool idling.
If you keep the emission equipment, try to limit the cold winter idling as much as you can.

Thanks Mike, No my second diesel had a d-max for 8 years with a Super Chips tuner and Banks exhaust it got 18 to 21 mpg it's just a shocker
to go down to 12mpg after doing so good for so long. I'll do all the deletes in a couple of years after I make sure it isn't going to break on me and need the warranty.

You'll should still get factory warranty with the programmer, just don't put down to many flags. Put the truck back to stock off the lot condition. I run my truck on stock mode, so my only flag is that my truck isn't doing the regen cycle and my air horn/egr cooler is semi clean. I just removed my dpf/second cat and left the stock down pipe and stock muffler. Welding up a chunk of exhaust pipe onto some plate steel for the flange. The stock muffler is 4in and a flow thru design. The truck still sounds the same, and I must have picked up 20rwhp just by removing the dpf/cat. Just hated looking at dirty oil, and seeing the grey air horn turning that copperish look to it. I have nearly 8000 miles on the oil and its still pretty clean.
You'll will start to set of flags, if you crank-up the power. The stock truck will not take too much more power over stock mode.

Ok just did the second fill up and it's a little better, if it goes up this much every fill up by the end of the year I won't have to put any fuel in it............LOL
13.1 on the lie o meter
and 12.73 on the calculator, so .83 better on the calculator.

Just to keep you all updated, filled up again today 11.9 on the calculator and 12.5 on the lie o meter. But I filled up at a different location today, then drove 90 some miles, and the lie o meter was up to 15.5, it's never been that high before. Maybe I've been getting some cheap fuel, it was a Marathon station today I think for the next few fill ups I'll try to stay with Marathon and see if there is a difference then go back to the exxon to see what happens.
High Bid, an old millionaire at my lake told me the best way to get good fuel milage was to lie about it, I think he has a point........LOL
Ok filled up again for my 90 mile trip again and the lie o meter was fairly right on today but the wrong way!!! 13.45 on it and 13.5 on the calculator thats close enough to being right for me.
On the trip home 60 mph and average 16.2, I think by the time it really gets broke in I'll be happier than I've been for the first few fill ups.

More recently I've tried testing my mpg @ different speeds/rpms. I drive the same route to/from work which includes hwy. At 65mpg I'm running roughly 1600rpms. At 73-75 I'm running roughly 1800 rpms. I have noticed my mpg increases w/the higher rpms over the same route w/no other changes to the truck. This is based on both the lie-o-meter and hand calculating. Just a thought but you might want to try it and check the results.
