Valve Adjustment Gone Wrong!
Over the weekend I had my rockers off to install valve springs and injectors. When I adjusted my valves I forgot to turn the engine to TDC. When I started the engine it sounded awful. The engine noise is not a rattle it's more like a popping sound. Would a wrong adjustment cause this problem?

Ummmm. Hmmm.
How did you even get clearance with some of the cam followers up?
Better check for bent pushrods, valve bridges, & valve stems. Might have broken a spring or two also, which could have dropped a valve.
Bad news man.

DON'T RUN IT.
That popping sound is likely bad juju.
Get it to a Diesel mechanic as soon as possible, Cummins certified would be preferable.
Bigwheels went through most of the things that could be biting you;

I wonder if you set some with the lifter partly up, and ended up with a ton of clearance when the lifter was down if the pushrod came off the rocker or something.
Have you pulled the valve cover off to look?
As long as a pushrod didn't get wedged in away from its seat, I wouldn't think you would have caused a piston/valve collision.
Anyway, I'd at least pull the valve cover and see what you've got.

I'm guessing that the popping sound is compression going back out the intake. I would think that there is an extra 10-20thou between the valves and piston. Severe engine damage is possible, but as long as you didn't really botch it, I bet that you can put them into spec and be fine (inspecting everything of course). Fingers crossed......
