ULSD & light smoke at idle - heavy smoke on WOT

is that right?

or have i broken something?

got a K&N FIPK & was a straight pipe, changed that to a BullyDog 4 inch straight thru muffler at same time noticed this.

got a BDDLPP set on PERF since Christmas.

got a DIY advanced Crank Sensor.
http://s27.photobucket.com/albums/c154/cranksensor/

used to get some smoke on WOT - just enough to be cool, not enough to really "hang" or be a big cloud,

noticed it puffing black smoke lightly at idle last week, then yesterday at Rob C's house, he noticed it without me saying anything (it might have been the 4 tries to get the trailer up his goat trail of a driveway)

did a few stomps on the loud pedal today, it shoots out a big plume of black smoke. got some Diesel Service Power kleen in there, and half gallon of used motor oil for lubricity.

new fuel filter & oil change in last ~3k miles.

fuel mileage indicates more fuel is going out the tailpipe than the transmission.
dropped ~1.5 mpg or so by overhead

he said the forums said more smoke, said his 2nd gen (very mod'ed) was pouring smoke till he added some used motor oil

I think you'd have to go back to stock to see it that cleared it up.

the downloader on perf will definitely get you smoke.

I will throw out there that it seems a lot of these trucks (325/610's mainly) smoke more as they loosen up.

a few stomps on the loud pedal will hurt your mpg for sure.

You are kind of trying to play both sides here (I want big hp out of a box/downloader, but I don't want smoke at idle). You can't have both.

ULSD should not have any affect on you smoke levels.

You know, I didn't notice it until you mentioned it. So this morning I got on it pretty hard and yes, I'm seeing more smoke than before.

same here. It smoked some before, but with ULSD the smoke level has increased when runing lvl 3 or higher. Stock no smoke.

I had one tank of it, and I noticed a haze behind me under normal driving conditions (accelerating from stop light). With regular LSD, there is no smoke or haze at all. Great, now that will make the freakin tree huggers happy won't it . . .

To be perfectly honest with ya i have only run 1 tank of ULSD and I thought it cut the smoke in half. Even with the box on high I couldent get it to smoke much at all.. After that tank was gone and back on LSD the smoke returned. Dont know what to think of your trucks smoking more but to me it should be the other way around, more like mine with less smoke.

I'm bone stock, no boxes, and have noticed smoke at idle, more smoke when I stomp on it, all since we got the ULSD last month, and I had NO smoke before that was noticable. I just changed my oil and cleaned my filter at 7K. I realize that the engine may be beginning to break in and the level of smoke may be the new normal.

John I narrowed it down to the fuel. It has to be in the timming is all I can figure. I have now removed all the variables that I can think off.
The 04 got a clean bill of health from the dealer the other day. I pulled the carriage up to VA (22,120 lbs combined at the scale) and ran the truck hard with out the box installed. I never saw any smoke out the pipe. However I straight piped her yesterday, keeping the kitty, and there was enough carbon in there to cook enough BBQ for the entire state of TX! That thing is caked about an 1/8" thick. Right before I left she got the oil, fuel (cut and clean inside), and air filter changed. This new fuel is rough. I ran the valves today so we shall see how that does on the trip to TX. Fuel milage has been total crap lately, especially loaded. A 2300lbs flat deck trailer dropped her down to 14.3 MPG! Same load on the old fuel avg 16 MPG flat.
The 95 is still having a fit with this stuff. Warm motor is all right when the thermostate is opened but still huffing when it cycles shut and engine temps are higher. Also starting to have white smoke momentarily on start up. If you blip the throttle 200 RPM it will huff a big black billow. I engulfed a car the other day coming off the clutch. This truck had the oil, fuel and air filters changed along with the inter cooler boots checked and the star wheel cut back. Little help. Going to try and run the valves, only 20k since last adjusted, and check the timing for slippage. Honestly dont think that it is going to help but what else ya going to do on vacation.
Both the trucks have been worked over the last month pulling up the interstate through the Appalachin Mtns hauling trailers. Not to mention that I am a maintanence junky. We will see what the future holds. Personally I think the EPA boys goofed on this ULSD stuff.

you run the straight pipe with the trailer on yet? there's a reason i put a muffler back on....

good data.

settles my nerves some. been worried. spent ~hour moving trailers around yard today (got 4 trailers in 1/2 acre lot...) and i was backing thru the haze, pretty stinky. ended up shutting it off to change hitches.

i am pretty much scared to let it idle any more than i need to.

i just did the air filter ~3 months ago, will re-do it tomorrow.
may just try to get a BHAF to go on the K&N tube. to much hassle to re-oil the k&n.

i will put the BDDLPP back to "stock" tomorrow, run back & forth to church, let it idle some, if it's still heavy, will back off the DIY timing sensor.

report back then.

glad your 04 got a clean bill of health. mine will go in this week for a check up if this continues, need an alignment & steering wheel center

put serving of Diesel Service Power Kleen in there, and half gallon used oil per your advise.

seems like it made the idle smoke blue now, like it is burning oil,
but i think that is just some weird side effect.

i've ran that concoction for ~6 months now with very little smoke except WOT.

I've been reading some of these posts about the ULSD, and was hoping it was something of a placebo affect or hypoconriac thing...but I think this new fuel is making a difference. I have a 2nd gen, but on start up I get a puff of smoke now too, and it stinks a whole lot more than it used to when idling. Time will tell I guess

I have the stink of diesel on both my trucks also. Forgot to mention that.
John, No I havent hauled the trailer with mine yet. I can tell ya that it is much quieter than yours was. Wot at 3 grand sounds like yours at idle. The kitty is doing a good job at keeping the noise down. EGTs are alot better now. I can actually see under 400 degrees coasting now. 250 actually. Temps are barely higher than the 12 valve under most conditions. Shifting has improved to the point that my mom sitting in the back seat could tell the truck was running better! Said it doesnt feel like it has power loss at the shifts. That muffler is restrictive! I may get the MBRP for the truck but there was none localy available on friday and we are getting ready to head to TX. I am trying anything for MPG right now. Probably put 4k miles on the trucks in the last 3 weeks with another 3500 miles to go in the next month at the bare min.

RobC, sounds good. i am happy with the 4' BD on mine now.

i took my truck to Sick Bay today. Got the Medic's looking at it.....

i took it back to stock on the BDDLPP monday, was no noticable smoke at idle, barely any at WOT.

keep getting smokier and smokier....noticable at idle, then coming over hood at stoplights again...then smoke at WOT..

then this morning, smoke at 3/4 throttle.

then pulled out on RedBank & North Rhett (tough merge) and at 3/4 throttle it started "missing" let off, had to get back on due traffic, same thing again

oh no. RutRoe Raggy...this ain't good...

are the 06's that bad? i may need one.....

I too have been getting more smoke since USLD has been introduced up here in the white north.
Me thinks this fuel needs to be burnt hotter then the old regular diesel.
