Turbo Questions!

Ok guys this 06 Texas truck is turning into more problems. I just installed my block heater cord Easy job. But in doing so when I had my intake tube off I checked out turbo. The impeller blades are very worn and surface right behind silencer ring pitted. very small amount of bearing play. I noticed the turbo whines. I never heard a whine on my 01. Does the 06 turbos whine. it does still have silencer ring. I was wondering if its going out. Any sugestions? tranny rebuild was costly enough. I guess you never know on a used truck the total history....

Look for a used take off, many around, can be had for as little as 300. I got mine for a bottle of scotch.

I just replaced my turbo. I had oil loss with no other signs of burning blow by or leaks. Replaced the turbo and it fixed the problem. I just wanted to point out that the turbo showed no outward signs of wear, very little bearing play and no pitting or visible damage. The seal was slightly leaking and losing the oil. I could not find a used one with the electronic waste gate. End up paying $940 for a rebuild.

06 Mega.

You can get engine parts through Cummins for less money than a dealer. All you need is the engine number which can be found on the valve cover when you call them.

Did the PO have an aftermarket air cleaner / cold air on it?

I bought my HE351 for $300 on the classifieds here. It had 40,000 miles on it and wasn't abused. Looked like new. These turbos are getting more popular to install on other applications so maybe demand is on the way up.

Thanks Guys I will look for one. does anyone know if it has to be an 06 turbo or will other 3rd. generations work. and it still has the original air box on it. but the filter was so plugged when i got the truck. I dont understand why anyone who spends that kind of money on a truck wont replace a 15 dollar air filter. They are either stupid or lazy or both!

04.5-07 5.9 turbos will all work. The 03-04 will not as they were smaller and not e-gated.

Your engine is dusted. No doubt about it. You need to have an oil analysis done....pronto..... Dosen't sound good with the turbo blades pitted.

I saw that you said the housing was original, but what about the filter? Was it the paper one?

I agree on the oil analysis. That, and I sold my stock turbo for 150... so keep looking.

Ok so what exactly do you mean when its dusted? are you saying there is possible bearing damage? or cylinder wall damage? The guy at the deisel shop told me these motors are pretty tough. Yes it had paper filter in it when i got it but who knows before that. Maybe i should of stayed away from a texas truck!!!

Dusted means that particles have gotten past the filter and damaged the turbo and possibly components past it.

Exactly, the turbo is not really a big deal. The big deal is the cylinder walls and rings. An oil analysis should show you how well everything is doing by looking at wear metals and the silicone level will tell you if you ingested any dirt. Don't panic yet. Do the oil analysis.

Would it be the insolubles more so than the silicon levels for dirt getting past the filter?
