Turbo Drain Tube & Wheel Bearing.

My father called me last night saying that his truck (04.5 1 ton) had a violent shake in the front end going down the freeway. I assumed it was death wobble then he told me that the ABS light kicked on and he heard all sorts of grinding going on. Towed the truck home last night, got the drivers front wheel off and I seen flakes of metal everywhere. I thought maybe a caliper stuck but I removed the caliper/brakes and they look good. When you spin the hub you can hear metal on metal, thats a indication of a shot bearing? Started to remove everything and got down to the removing the hub nut. Now do I need a puller to get the hub/rotor off? I tried pounding on it with no luck.

Also, I noticed that the entire bottom of his truck is covered in oil, the tube running from the turbo to the block is leaking like a sieve, but the tube is tight? Is there o-rings or something in there? The tube on my 03 bolts down, his is different, looks like a funnel that's just stuck into the side of the block. Any suggestions on taking care of that?

Thanks.

Nate,

Sounds like the wheel bearing is shot to me. Since the bearing is shot, a puller won't hurt... but if you don't have access to one, Mr. Gadget has some pretty good tips here (https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...=217250&page=9). Just did my front axle ujoints recently using his tips. Took me about 3 1/2 hours for one side and lots of PB Blaster.

I'm 20-30 miles from you so let me know if you need something...

The only thing holding rotor on is rust.
Have someone turn rotor, while you hit
on back side with sledge. You think it
is never going to come off. It will.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I got a puller from work last night. Headed down to my shop now to pull this sucker off. Did they change the drain tube design from 03 to 04.5? Mine has two bolts holding it down, his looks like the end of a funnel is shoved into the block, sortive dumb.

Thanks for the link Brad. Bookmarked that one.

Its also common for the flange that bolts to the turbo with 2 10mm bolts to fracture. Thats at the top of the tube..

Well I got the wheel bearing all done, that went alot easier then I thought it would.

Started working on the drain tube, got the 2 10mm bolts off. And I found that the tube going into the block is split. It just about broke in half where the tip inserts into the block. Do these tubes just push in or are they screwed? It's going to be tricky to get the bottom half of the tube out now. Any ideas on getting that out?

I dunno if it matters or not but he has a HTT turbo, do I have to get that drain tube from them?

that tube just pushes in. I don't know for sure but its probably pretty safe to say the factory drain tube is all you'll need for a replacement. I tore mine off at the block when i was putting my engine in the frame on my truck. If i remember correctly i used a punch that i ground to a point on the one side. I beleive its actually called a cape chisel... anyway, you drive it in on the one side to collapse the tube in on itself and then pull it out with needle nose. Even if it has to be driven into the block it shouldnt do any harm sitting on the bottom of the pan. good luck with it, that isnt the nicest spot on the truck
