Trying to decide

My 04.5 2500 is making a serious valve lashing sound at idle and I just talked to my dealer about the 100k warranty.

He asked me if I had been changing my filter on a regualr basis. I told him every 5k miles along with the oil. He stated there was another filter besides the feul/water separator on the side of the engine. WHere is this filter located and would it cause the engine to lean out like that and not throw a code?

I'm just cautious about taking to the dealer because I know the bill will be very high.

If the engine is making noise its covered under warranty. Have you checked the valves to see if they need adjustment?

I have never heard of another filer. You need to ask him the name of it.

I do not believe that adjusting the valve lash is covered, but I could be wrong.

Where do you live?

Hopefully, someone will be able to tell you where to go to get them adjusted cheaper than the dealer.

I would pester the dealer tho...

I don't know about a second filter. Could he have possibly been asking about the oil filter and the fuel filter? Fuel is on the driver's side, oil on the passenger's side.

Sounds about as smart as the service advisor at the dealership I visited a while back that told me I was probably due for new spark plugs.

Three filters - air, oil, and fuel

Dont pay any body to check your valves, they are not hard to do. I have heard of some kind of filter being under the valve covers on the 6.7's maybe he was confused.

Maybe he's talking about the mesh screen in the fuel tank pick-up? There are absolutely NO other filters on the fuel feed side of the engine, and I just confirmed with the schematic from the big book.

The only filters I change regularly are the fuel, oil and air. I don't know of any others except maybe the trans filter.

I have not had very good experience in NE Florida with any dealer. The best of the lot seems to be Garber on Hwy 17 in Green Cove.

Drop me a pm if you want some details.

the dealers recommend to change out your blinker fluid filter every few thousand miles. If you have them rotate your glow plugs at the same time they give you a heck of a deal

I too have very little faith in Dodge dealerships when it comes to the diesels. I am currently having problems with my local dealership over a mis diagnosis that has cost me about $2000 in parts and labour. Seems like they don't think they are responsible. I'm not really sure what they think I was paying for. ?

Taking a vehicle in to a dealer to have a noise investigated is just asking to get raped. I rarely have occaision to do so, but when I do I always instruct them as to exactly what I want done, checked, looked at, fixed, whatever. No more. And make it perfectly clear up front you are not interested in any scheduled or routine maintenance either.

update....

Yesterday afternoon they called to tell me they hadn't found anything yet...

This afternoon the service writer calls me to tell me the mechanic states after all his test the only code thrown was water in the fuel.

Mind you I just put in a new filter less than a 1/4 tank ago and did clean out the filter housiing and everything. I did suck out the junk in the bottom as well because the drain was stopped up. Got all that taken care of less than 2 weeks ago. Even after the filter change the lashing sounds are still evident.

The dealer raped me on a clean the filter out and put in a new filter for over 140.00. Must have been a precious filter. After that he stated it still might be in the lift pump just before the injectors and there is a sensor that determine how lean or rich to make the diesel? ***....I though diesel explodes on compression?

Oh well we are up to 300.00 for practicing on my diesel. If they decide it was dirty fuel with water and all that crap I'm going to get 1/2 full tank dumped and put in fresh fuel. See how that works out. I'm leaning to the side that the mechanic is not as smart as he may think.

I've also been running bio cide and fuel injector cleaner by lucas every tank, so tell me how my fuel could be so crappy?

I'm not believing the dealer right now.

any ideas?

what do u mean by lean or rich. fuel is fuel. the rp sensor tells ecu what rail pressure is. ecu decides if rail needs more or less fuel by telling the fca regulator on the cp3 pump.
