Truck got towed to dealership tonight..

Truck stalled on me twice, and is hard starting. Now when it does start, it ran for about 10 seconds then it would die. What does this sound like to you guys? Its an 04.5 CTD with about 23k miles on it. I'm thinking its either a leaking injector, causing fuel to flood the engine and stop it from running, or its the lift pump. The truck got towed to the dealer, and the service dept was closed when I got there, so I had to use thier night drop. I will know more tommorow, but, at least its covered under warranty.
This blows.. Im grateful to be using my dads 04 dakota 4.7 5 spd, but its still not a cummins

EDIT: As a plus, I did get to meet Aloha from the board, as he lives in my town, and my truck just happened to break down right in front of his work place It was good meeting you Jeff, and here's to hoping we have a great member like you with the DTR so cal chapter! Thanks again for the offer to let me borro your dakota

Lift pump is dead. You should be getting the in tank update tomorrow. Same thing happened to my Bro's 04.5 CTD.

Im going to call the dealer to make sure it gets the in tank update if thats what it is.. its really a bummer to have the truck just die on you like that, with as few miles as it has on it.
Oh well.. It should be back to good in no time. Just hoping that they don't say anything about my engine driven on board air.. Not that that would cause the lift pump to go dead, so I shouldn't have any issues.

I will keep you all posted for sure.. I will probably have them do the white smoke and poor fuel imleage TSB flash while Im down there.. Just seems to make sense to have it all done at once. This is my first time to see my dealers service in action, so Im hoping for the best.

Ok, Got the truck back today, turns out it was the lift pump. Got the In tank pump update, and seems to be running like a champ. They also did the mileage/white smoke flash

Oh what a feeling. Good to have her back on the road and dependable. This will be the last time it lets you down. Wont have to worry about the old style junk LP anymore.

Glad to hear it's fixed! Now I don't have to wash the Dakota!

How was Moss Bros service?

Let me know how the mileage / smoke flash works out. I'm curious to know what the flash changes to prevent excessive smoke at startup. Also curious if you find that the mileage flash has any effect on power.

Jeff,
Moss Bros service was EXCELLENT! Obviously no charge for the work, they started on the truck at about 10 am, and I picked it up at 2:30pm. Not only did they fix the truck, they washed it, and cleaned up the interior as well. I will let you know how the mileage flash works out. I am going to be filling the truck up with fuel tommorow, so I will be able to get an accurate mileage reading. Thanks again for volunteering the use of your dakota, but you wouldn't have to wash it for me, heck, I'd take it to the car wash for you, for letting me use it

EDIT: as far as the power goes, it actually feels like it has more power, and the turbo seems to spool faster, with less lag between shifts (Its a 6 spd manual) Its like a whole new truck!

Im just glad to have my truck back, and Im glad it wasnt something more serious. I don't know how much longer I could have taken driving a dakota gasser Although, it was a 5 spd manual with the 4.7 V8, it was mighty quick for a little truck LOL...

WOW! You must be RICH or won the lottery to be able to fill your truck up! Especially @ $3.00+ a gallon!

Hey guys....I haven't heard of a problem with the 2004 lift pumps. What is wrong with them exactly. And by the way....what does a lift pump do...

A lift pump supplies fuel to your engine. They are generally attached to the motor on trucks up to the 04.5 model year, and the 05 got an in tank version of the lift pump which is supposed to be ALOT better, with a much less failure rate supposedly. If your pump fails, they will automatically give you the in tank pump upgrade, but I wish mine hadnt failed. It would have saved me a lot of headache with all the hassle. Also, be warned, when my lift pump went out, I got no warning. It was working fine one minute, then the next it quit.
