Truck Feels Loose After New Tires

I did a search on the death wobble and I don't think thats my problem. I just installed 285/70/17 10ply (E rated) Toyo Open Country A/T's running them @ about 75 psi. The truck just seems to ride weird, just a little side to side of the sterring wheel and truck seems to be loose. Like the back end is way light. It's hard to explain....the old stockers only had about 5/32 left on them, could it just be the size of the lug ? It only has 29,000 miles on it , could I have front end problems already?
Thanks for any help

I don't know if this is the case here but some tires brands have "sharper" edges which make them more sensitive to uneven roads. Some times the edges get round off with time and they will track better. Not all brands make the same tread width for a given tire size, which has some effect.

I'm assuming you've double checked the pressure and lug nut torque.

75psi? I run like 45 in the rear and 55 in the front. Air them down a littel see what happens.

Arrow Tread Design

The answer is tread design.....the the tire tread is taller than you are used to and you are feeling it roll.
We bought (8) new rear tires for two pieces of fire apparatus..(1500 gpm pumpers/1000 gal water....(originally came with M&S Michein truck tires and they drove like stock cars...great) We installed another brand M&S tires....wow... could not keep the trucks in their own lane.....they did as you described.... with the slightest steering movement, it felt like the rear end was on ice and the truck swayed dangerously.........we had all tires removed and had tires with a lower profile tread mounted and we were back to OK.
Bottom line TREAD IS TALL and truck is rolling on it...........it will stop after tread wears down some or you change the tires for a different style tread.
We had the service manager drive our trucks and he agreed they were dangerous........he notified the manufacturer and replaced tires.....

Not only taller tread, but a taller tire as well! Normal...

The tread on an A/T should not cause that problem and tire height is irrelevant because they're barely bigger than stock. A/T's are hardly any different from a road tire (the stockers are labeled as A/T's anyway). Now an M/T could cause that because the tread is significantly different from a regular tire, but my Toyo M/T's ride just as stable as the stockers.

I think your problem is too much air pressure for driving around empty. Like someone else said, try running them at 45psi or so and it should improve the ride dramatically.

I beg to differ...I just put Nitto Terra Grapplers on mine, and they feel a bit squirly. Tread compound is softer than the stock tires, so they will react differently, also the tread is deeper, therefore allowing more movement. Just my .02

They have a similar tread as my tires. I almost took them back as soon as I had them mounted. They will wear in after about 1000 miles or so. Dropping air pressure won't help - at least it didn't for me. But it only took me 9 days to get that first 1000 miles so it wasn't too bad.

I ran 285 toyos for a while. I thought they rode a little better than stock but my tires where not E load range. I ran 35s and went back to a 305 (20" wheels) because my truck drove crappy. you may need ball joints or something already. Im pretty sure that pourindiesel told me he has put new ball joints in with 34k on his trk I believe. I had mine looked at and they said they was some play in them at 14k miles pretty dissapointing needs work already.

Yep I double checked the lugs...all good there. Next I dropped pressure to 50 in the rear and 55 in front, that took care of 97% of it. Maybe with a 1000 miles or so the 3% will go away. Thanks for all the replys, I love this place

Where did you get the idea to 75 PSI in your tires, what were you going when towing, 100 PSI!!!!!

I think you will be happy with your toyos. I didnt know they made an E load range 285 when I bought mine. I have bought 3 sets of toyo tires I think they are one of the best out there. I just bought another set of new toyos for my truck. I sold the 285s to a guy that needed some new rubber.

oops I was going by the side wall that said max 80 PSI, at first I thought it might have been sidewall flex Tow.......who tows? I am one of "those guy's" that always wanted a diesel and didn't need to justify it to buy it. I have never towed over 4k.....one you guys should hook me up with about a 10k load so I can break it in right

JWB600 It took me over a month to deciede on a tire, I was going to go with H2 take offs, but I like the stock wheel, then just the 315's, then I was reading on here and TDR about the "D" range tires and the ones with them getting bashed for it. The only 285 10 ply I could find was the Toyo, but It took my tire dealer 4 days to get them, but he made up for it 'cause the 285 BFG's K/O were 200.00 more than the Toyo's. I was not to sure about a tire made in china, but the reviews I have read on the tire sights were really good. The Nitto's were really close in price, but then again it was only a D range and everyone seems to like them at first, then @ 10,000 miles there 1/2 gone. So far after I got the pressure adjusted, I really like them, no whine and they look good too.
