transmission trouble
transmission trouble
Hey everyone, I have a 06 2500 quadcab 4x4 48re ctd 22500 miles. My problem started around 3 mnths ago. Morning start up I would put in reverse to back out of garage and I would have to step on the throttle to get it to move. Then it kept getting worse I would have to rev engine to 2000 to get truck to move unless I would sit there for awhile in reverse then it would start moving on its own after 10 to 20 seconds. Then be fine the rest of the day. So I took it into dealer. They had it for 8 days. pulled transmission put new seals in. new front pump. Got it home. Then next morning got in to leave, does same thing I had it in the shop for. But now it wont move after an hour of sitting. So back to the shop I go. Anyone else had this trouble. Thanks in advance.
Fill out your sig. so we know what your driving. There is a checkvalve in the cooler line that is probably stuck. That lets all the fluid drain back into the trans and cause what your describing. Depending on the vinatge of your truck, it makes a difference where the valve is located. There is a recall on the 03's for a possible problem with the cooler that involves replacing the line that has the check valve in it as well.
Could it be the shift lever linkage, sometimes when I shift from park to reverse or drive, even though the indicator is clearly in drive or reverse it really has not engaged anything. A slight movement of the colume shift lever causes it to engage properly. I beleive their is a factory update for this. Maybe your problem is different.

Sounds like the exact same problem I had. I talked to Dave, and am having my trans pulled tonight to have it looked at. Here's my guess as to what it is.
1. Reverse band is shot (that would explain it getting worse over time). Drop the pan and tighten up the band adjustment, or see if there is a lot of slop in the lever.
2. The reverse servo piston is cocked inside the cylinder. This would make it not work at all, as fluid would just run past it and not engage anything. But this would probably happen all at once, not over time.
3. The reverse servo piston is cracked (happens when it sticks). The reverse band apply lever has an extrusion on the top of it that rides in a collar, when the fluid pushes the piston down, the collar holds the protrusion down which applies the band. The problem is that the protrusion pushes the piston to the side (from deflection in the lever) and eventually wears to where it will stick...the pressure builds up and never releases and cracks the piston.
Either way, you can check for the problem just by dropping the pan. If there is play in the band apply lever, you piston is shot/cocked which you'll probably be able to see. If the band has a lot of slop in it even after you tighten it down all the way, the band is shot, and you'll have to drop the trans to fix it. Hope this helps.

Got truck back Monday the 16th. Dealer pulled tranny again. Pump and sealing rings seals on reverse servo failed. Chrysler tech told dealer not to replace pump the first time I had it in the shop so they say. They also replaced cooler line and check valve for the pressure side cooler line. Seems to have fixed the problem. Also seems it shifts alot smoother now and it dont hunt for gears at 45mph like it did before.

Hey vzdude.
It would be nice if he did fill out his sig. but in his first post he stated what he had a problem with and I quote (Hey everyone, I have a 06 2500 quadcab 4x4 48re ctd 22500 miles.) end quote.
As far as the trans problem. I hope your dealer has a good tranny guy.
Make sure if they wind up replacing it if they say its more cost effective than a rebuild that they DON'T use LKQ!
LKQ stands for: (like kind quality)
In other words used junk out of some scrap yard.
A new truck with used parts just isn't right the way I look at it.
These transmissions are finicky enough as it is. Seems like you either have one that runs well for the life of your truck, or you don't. If your dealership replaced the pump then it could have had metal floating in the bottom of the pan from that bad pump. If it did then all that crap going through your VB will give you fits. I had a 48RE in my 05 that gave me fits until it was replaced. Oh yea it was a LKQ is why I warned you about them. It lasted about 6 months started slipping in 3rd and 4th. I had that one rebuilt at the wrong place it seems. It lasted 3 weeks until I twisted the input shaft off of it. Found Dave Georend by word of mouth in Iowa from Indiana and he replaced the last one. That one has been running like a dream. Shifts smooth with a triple disk towing 26 to 30k behind it. Also I now get about 2 MPG better now because he setup the TC to lockup sooner in the shifts.
Good luck with your trans problem.
Mark
