Transmission or Torque Convertor Problem?
Transmission or Torque Convertor Problem?
I am trying to figure out which one I am having a problem with.....a couple of days ago I was on the way to work and I slowly laid into the throttle and when it went to shift from 1 to 2 it just slipped for a second and then shifted. since then it has gotten worse, now it doesnt want to shift from without slipping really really bad. I am talking 5-6 seconds of slipping and then it finally lay's into 2nd gear. It is only happening from the 1 to 2 shift. 2 to 3 and 3 to 4 are good, lock up is also good.
I checked the fluid which was changed about 12-15k miles ago, along with the filter. The fluid already has a slight brown tint to it and smells burnt. the level was good also!
is my tq conv. out or is it the trans itself?
btw, the truck has 139k miles on it.......

no it just feels like it is slipping really badly. no noises or shaking of any kind. just rev's really bad
so your think its the converter huh?
that was my first thought since it shifted fine a pulled good until now

so could I just get away with replacing the converter to get the truck running?
the trans itself has always seemed strong but now its just like it doesnt have any power getting to it!

2 nd gear band--front band is slipping.
Adjust it , it is external.
Change the fluid and filter every 10,000 miles. This will protect the trans.
My advice, is if you want/need a converter, then do a VB too.
BTW, all of these trucks need a converter--even stock!!!!

I adjusted both bands at the same time I did the fluid and filter change, but I will do it again to see what happens! this truck was used to haul with before I got it so it say some harder miles than I put on it. I figured the converter was just completely shot

I don't think it's the TC. As suggested above, it is either the bands or valve body. A modded valve body will increase fluid line pressure and help with the shifts. It could also be the 1-2 lever and anchor that is causing an issue. The tranny builders, like Goerend, will replace these with billet pieces, as well as the front servo cover. They are much tougher pieces.
IIRC, for a TC to slip, it needs to be locked up and it isn't in the 1-2 shift. If the motor was flaring at highway speeds, then I would say it was your TC.
The transmission is one of those things that when you upgrade one thing, you need to upgrade another and another and another for it to work at it's best.

Sounds to me like the pressure solenoid may be going out. They are easy to replace and common problem on the 48re
I can tell you its not the TC, it doesnt lock up in 1st or 2nd gear so its not the TC clutch slipping. If youre slipping the clutches or bands, chances are they are already shot. Doesnt take much slippage to ruin one.
so how intensive would it be to get the bands fixed back to where they need to be. I'm not gonna dump the money into a built trans because i all actuality I am probably getting rid of the truck anyway. how much cash am i looking at to fix my problem?
update
I just finished the external band adjustment. took the truck around the block to see if it made a difference, no difference. I notice that when you take off from a dead stop and the truck hits it normal shift point to go into second that you can hear it start to rev. then I can let out of the throttle and the truck will slide into second. once I am into second i dont have any problems.
btw, thank to all those that are helping me! I dont want throw money I dont have at something that isnt going to fix my problem!

Clutch and band kits are not expensive at all, its the hard parts and labor you pay if you have someone do it for you. Most clutch kits are around $250 last time I looked, luckily for you it doesnt sound like you need hard parts. I'd call around and see what a local shop would charge you to do what you need done. Most likely around $600+ for labor plus parts to remove the tranny, install a new band and inspect clutches, etc and put it back in.
Hopefully you can find a good shop, one of the local shops close to me wanted $2800 just to install a new TC and Valvebody, $1100 just in labor.

the wife will like that number compared to what I told her. I stopped driving the truck as soon as it had this happen hopefully I have saved myself some headache and money by not tearing it up extremely bad.
where can I get a clutch and band kit? link or something would really help me out!
