Transmission Oil

well, I just got done with my first transmission service @ 26K mi. The shop owner said the oil still looked really good coming out of it...but I'm second guessing the oil he put in there though...

6 quarts of this went in: (no flush, just a new filter)

He was certain this was the correct oil...it drove great for the 2 miles on the freeway, but now that I'm home I'm double checking before I tow again.

My owners manual says Mopar ATF+4 as a recommendation...

my truck is an automatic '04.5

You had best hope that is not what he put in there!!!

Don't drive the truck until you confirm that he put ATF+4 in. If he didn't, well... I'll get in trouble if I tell you what I would do.

Find out ASAP!!!

I would make sure to use ATF+4 for warrenty purposes. Also the 48RE has something like 13 quarts of ATF fluid running around in there and also shares some with the transfer case. Switching out 6 quarts (in my opinion) is no where near as good as a full flush.

I just did a drop and change myself. The only difference is I put a mag-hytech double deep pan on. I changed the filter and put 7-1/2 quarts back in. So 6 doesn't seem out of the ordinary. I too believe that only changing out 6-7 quarts and a filter doesn't do as much as if you were to replace all of the fluid.... but when the dealer "flushes" it they don't replace the filter. So in my mind I say that drain, change filter, and fill with 6-7 qts. Every 25k or so is alot better than flushing and no filter every 50k. Also how many of you guys can honestly say that you have done trans fluid changes as often as this in the past. I have always said oh I have 100k on the ticker I should probably change the trans fluid and filter...... Now I know we are dealing with diesels here and towing and such but come on I don't spend that much money changing my oil.

I do believe that the tranny has a separate res than that of the T-case.

underwood- I completely agree, and will be looking into that deep pan

Flush is the ONLY way to go! Leave that poor old filter thats good for MANY thousands of miles alone and remove/replace all the fliud, not just some of the fliuid.

Trans Flush

What do you have to do to get a complete trans. flush?

Is there another plug you have to remove?

Can you apply air to some port and blow out the system?

I have done a pan removal and filter change in the past but never a flush.
