transmission fill?
transmission fill?
I have a '03 with a 48re trans and have installed mag-hytec 727DD. It holds an additional 4 quarts of ATF. Since the ATF expands with heat and i have increased the volume of ATF, what would be a safe starting level that would prevent the level from passing the maximum level when the trans is hot...towing thru mountains, etc.
when P.M. is done on fire trucks they hold the brake and run it up to about 1500 rpms to build heat. once around 160 they stop and check the fluid level. you can drive them hard but the trannys we have dont really ever get that hot so i guess thats why they slip them so much.
as for your truck why dont you check it after youve drove through some traffic and see where it is at when hot?

the shop manual has a chart that has a curve. It shows what the level should be at a given transmission temperature. to find the temperature, it says to use their scan tool, which I don't have.
1. Where is the temperature sensor for in the transmission..i can take the temperature at the pan, entering transmission cooler,or leaving cooler. which is the best for determining fluid level?
2. Also, since the fluid capacity is increased, my assumption is that I should be slightly below the chart in the manual. True or not?
3. With the 727 dd pan comes an extenstion that lowers the filter in the pan. Is it the goal to make sure that the filter has a constant supply of fluid?
If that is the goal, I don't think that the level is too critical as long as I don't over fill and I ensure that the filter stays submersed in the ATF.
I did drive the truck for 15 to 20 miles and the level did not noticeably change.
thanks for the help.

Why not just put in the amount the trans calls for, plus 1-2 quarts and then start checking the level. If it is a additional 4 quart pan then you should be able to put 4 extra quarts in the the pan and it should not be over full Ever right? Am I missing something here?
