Transfer Pump??

My truck went into the dealer again due to hard starts, and finally a no start condition. I thought it was an injector problem again, but DC is staying that it is the transfer pump. I call it a lift pump and i thought on the 03's it was on the side of the fuel fliter housing but the dealer says that its in the tank. Is the dealer right, and I'm just crazy or are they planning on doin the update and giving me the 05 + setup. they are also saying it will be like $800 is this right?

The 03 transfer pump is located on the side of the fuel canister unless it has already been updated.

The updated pump will be an in-tank pump. $800 sounds high, should be around $500.

If you are under 100,000 miles and under 5 years which 03 should be, then the install should be free under warranty. The transfer pump is a part of the fuel system and thereby the engine warranty.

If your warranty has been voided then it's on you.

I took mine in today for the hard starting problem. There's been a couple times lately that I thought it wasn't gonna start. They said it was the exact same thing. They said the transfer pump (in tank) had some internal failures. Whatever. As long as it's on the road tomorrow like they said it would be. Would yers cough up a cloud of smoke when it finally did start? Mine would. Someone said this is indicative of an injector failure. But, my oil level is fine and my undercarriage is clean. Hopefully it really is the pump.

mine would start really really hard and when it would start it ran ok, maybe a little low on power......it did this about a year ago and it turned out to be a 3 bad injectors and they also replaced the rail pressure relief valve so that why i dont think its the transfer pump...ill be at the dealer tomorrow to get more info, keep me posted on how you make out too.

ok so i got the dealer to finnally check and see and yes the LP is under warranty. they are doing the in tank update. i still dont know why they think that the LP is bad when they never even moved the truck, but whatever i guess im getting a new LP. i mean i can hear the LP running and it sounds normal to me but i guess that doesnt really mean it ok. i hope it is the problem cuz the truck has been in over a week today.

Before I spent $ 800 on factory junk , I would get a Walbro from GDP at
a price that is significantly less. One can get the performance pump kit
with the 2 micron filter for $ 600 and this system will be FAR superior to
the factory offerings and especially the in tank setup.

For your information the in-tank transfer pump is the best pump DC has offered since 1998 on the dodge cummins. Prior to 98.5 they were mechanical lift pumps and they were dependable.
