transfer case shifting ignorance

Hello everyone,

New member here. I just got a 04 2500 4x4 CTD. Still can't figure out how to put it in 4L or 2L or N. I can pull the shifter from 2H down to 4H and back--its a little stiff, but doable. However, when I try to go up I get all sorts of gear grinding noise. The manual said this could happen, and I did what it suggested: rolling slowly while shifting, but still no luck.

Is there something I'm missing, or should I take it to the dealer?

Thanks!

1st off auto or stick? to go to 4Lo if yours is an auto, and your in 2 wd. Get it rolling at about 2 to 3 mph. and put trans in neutral then shift into 4Lo should go right in. Any how that is what I do. Another thing fill in your sig of your truck that way we all know what you drive and we can help alittle better on these small things. Most of all Welcome aboard Noob

As Sittenbull2 said. If it is an auto then put it in neutral before you try shifting the transfer case. If it is a standard then just push the clutch in before shifting. I use the 4wd often, in both hi and lo and do have not problems this way. 4 lo is sometimes a little stiff but with firm even pressure it goes back to 2 wd OK. Never have any gear grinding.

Re:transfer case shifting ignorance

When shifting into 4L, I push in the clutch, and I have to be "almost" stationary to feel the xfer case find its groove to slip in. And it sometimes takes a firm push or pull. If I do this rolling, it grinds like crazy. I rarely use 4L, and do use it only to circulate the fluids.

When going into 4H, I just push in the clutch and pull the lever back; in the driveway or on the highway. 4H and 2H are both slick.

As with many gear engagements, I've found it helps to be swift about it. Not slow, no pause.

Bulabula,

You should be able to shift between 2H and 4H while driving without using the clutch as long as the front and rear wheels are turning at the same speed. That is how all my 4X4's have worked.

Yeah I can take mine from 2H to 4H without touching the clutch. Just grab the handle and pull and it goes in smooth as butter.

Re:transfer case shifting ignorance

I have found that between 2H and 4H I do not need the clutch but going from 4L to 2H is really stiff until I push the clutch in. Seems to work best at a crawl. Getting out of 4L the transmission often snaps as tho it is wound up. Never found this on any other 4wd vehicles I have driven. Going into 4L is never a problem. BTW, I only go from 4L to 2H going straight and not while turning.

Yeah, going in and out of 4L I press in the clutch while my truck is barely moving (under 5 mph). I have yet to have a need for 4L besides testing it...haha.

[/quote]Last time ole mr Chris was on the beech, he almost didn't make it back. 4Lo or 4hi didn't make darn bit of difference. I did get a couple of chuckles from a kid when I told him I was running about 70psi in the tires. I've got more experience driving boats thru the surf and landing on the beach than driving wheeled vehicles on the beech.

After we aired them down, I owned that beech! LOL
