Ignorance WAS bliss

and a lot cheaper before coming to this board and getting educated!

So here I go, wallet open, down the bombing trail!

For starters, I have (2) questions for those of you that have installed A pillar gauges. I bought this truck used and it came with those smoked window vent shields. I've never had them on a vehicle before, but with this truck I have a problem with a huge blind spot looking out towards the driver side ext. mirror. I like and want to install a couple A pillar gauges w/tweeter but am concerned about making this problem worse. I once almost ran over one of those rice rockets at a 4way stop intersection as the entire car was hidden behind the mirror & pillar.

Question #2 - Do these pillar kits come as full replacement for the factory plastic? or do they fit-over the factory stuff? Also, what name brand gauges would you recommend?

1. fuel pressure
2. pyrometer or EGT

I am looking for something that will cosmetically match the factory gauges (color, face, lights). Electronic vs. mechanical

Thanks for your reply and the vast knowledge contained on this board.

I will attach a pic of my gages as far as I know there are both ones that attach over and ones that replace the entire pillar cover. I do not notice my gagues at all on the truck but there is a bit of a blind spot. As for gauges Isspro's match pretty good.

My old gauges. I now have a triple pillar digital. The outer rings on the digitals are painted silver now. The writing is teal. Pretty nice match.

I used the Gaugeworks pillar fomr AutoMeter. It fastens to the stock cover. They ship it with rivets, but I didn't want to see any fasteners and used GOOP ABS glue.

I had to cut the tweeter housing off of the factory cover to get the new cover on. This was in the instructions from AutoMeter.

Definitely Does NOT create any blind spots.

Re:Ignorance WAS bliss

I know about the blind spot you speak of. I have not specificaly noticed it to be caused by the vent shield, but maybe I never took particular notice before. I do find myself leaning forward to see around the blind spot when making turns and such.
When I installed my gauge pillar I did not notice it get worse though.
I got mine through Genos Garage. I replaced the stock pillar, and used one screw, which you can see at the top in the picture, to hold it on. It is snug enough at the bottom between the pillar and the dash that I saw no need to put a screw down there. I had to buy paint, which had to be matched because there is no code for it, and have it painted.

More pics here.
http://www.stamey.nu/Truck/

Chris

Re:Ignorance WAS bliss

For sure the pod will not affect the blind spot at all. It still will be a blind spot ;D On my 94 gasser I nailed a deer that I never saw. Came straight in from the blind spot and cost $5860.00 to get the truck back. That darn air bag bout pushed my head through the rear window. Anyway my 96 has the 2 pod from autometer on there now. No problem at all. Boost and pyro.

..PT..

G Scott:

I have the A-pillar gauges and the smoked vents. I do find that the gauges increase the blind spot, but not by much. You can replace the OEM pillar with the gauge pod. You may have to paint the pod to match your interior unless it's black. I have Autometer Z series gauges and they match the OEM gauges very well. You can see my gauge set-up in the member photo section, page 8. I added a fourth gauge (fuel pressure) in a rather interesting way as you can see in my pic.

Good luck!

DeWain

Re:Ignorance WAS bliss

I've got the tan interior and the black pod looks good. Soon to be smoothed and painted the body color of the truck. ;D
