transfer case ??

I have a 04 with 106k on it. It has a 6sp and a 271 t case. My t case has started making a nasty grinding noise when you put it in 4hi while going down the road. I changed the fluid "old fluid was black with shavings" and it quited it down some. while under the truck i noticed the rear seal was leaking down the back of the t case. I grabbed my rear d shaft and it has ALL kinds of slop in it. so i am guessing my t case is going to blow chunks soon.
BUT my ? is what is the differance from a 271 from a hemi and a 271 from our cummins? I found a almost new 271 from a hemi but don't want to buy it if it wont work.

Any help would be great

Sounds like the bearing retainer snap ring broke and it is wearing on the housing. Looked for the thread and couldn't find it. There is a kit to retain the bearing better than the cheezy snap ring from the factory. Try searching , maybe you'll have better luck than I did. I don't know if the kit will keep you from having to buy the rear housing though. Once they are worn.......well ....you know.....they don't fix themselves.

I havn't found anything either. How hard is it to change that snap ring? Also after i put the truck back in 2wd it still makes the grinding noise for a while, or until i stop. But this hasn't been near as bad since i changed the fluid.

The rear cover has to come off to change it. The access hole to release the snap ring ( if it isn't broke ) i son top of the transfercase output housing ( tailshaft) It has 2 torx screws holding it in I believer, then fight with some snapring pliers to try and get it to release! If it's broke......slide the housing right off, and you'll see a lot better how it goes together.

Check out www.moparamerica.com for a tcase. I think around $700 to $800.
I believe the difference between the Hemi and Cummins is the Cummins is a 271HD (heavy duty).

Well the hemi t case is from a 2500 hd. BUt i found one on that site for $765 thats pretty cheap., It looks like there is no core charge either. I will prolly run mine until it blows chunks and then just buy a new one from them. they have been the cheapest i have found.

Well when i changed my fluid the book i have says that it takes 2 qt's. so i put 2 quarts in it and i could touch fluid with my finger in the fill hole. But i read on the net that sometimes they will take 3 quarts? So i added amost another full quart last night. I have yet to drive it and see if the noise has quited down even more. the back of the case is wet from fluid but i don't think i leaked that much fluid, i have only put 200 - 250 miles on it since i changed the fluid. I would change the output seal but i don't think it will do any good, the shaft is so lose it would prolly ware a new one out fast.
So i am just going to milk the case out for as long as i can.

Hey Jonny, Check out my thread "Serious Grinding Noise" I think it will be helpful.
Althought your transfer case is a different series they are made by the same company. It is not only the rear retaining ring there is internal problems also but they are not serious enough to justify replacing it. If you have some mechanical abilities it is not to bad at all.
