Trans temp gauge for manual trans?

Is there any point in installing a transmission temperature gauge on a manual transmission? I guess monitoring any transmission temperature is important, but do manuals get hot like autos? Or do they only get hot if the clutch slips?

Unless you're towing really really heavy I don't think a temp gauge is necessary for the manuals.

a manual trans will get hot under heavy loading [towing at full rated/overrated weight] but under normal driving/light towing, the trans won't get overly hot [lower temps than a rear differential] the manual transmission temp and clutch slipping have no relation in temprature [if anything, trans temp will go down as clutch slips as there will be less load transmitted through gears]

I called up a couple of the larger transmission shops (Blumenthal's,etc.) advertised in the TDR with the same question. Their opinion was that it couldn't hurt but, wasn't necessary. It's a big transmission with a lot of fluid in it.
Rather than a guage, I opted for a manual transmission filter which I purchased from Quad 4X4 (406-446-2427, www.quad4x4.com, e-mail dan@quad4x4.com). They were a little high in their price but, you got an installation video (which you don't really need. It's a simple installation.) & e-xtra filter & gaskets.
The same unit can be purchased through Geno's Garage at the TDR, cheaper. Don't know if you have to be a member, or not.
You may want to check with the DTR Performance Shop Store. I don't know if they sell the filters, or not.
The filter housing is mounted on the "passenger side" of the trans. & adds a bit more gear oil, also.
You seem concerned about the health & well-being of your manual trans. & I thought I'd offer you another alternative you may not have thought of. Hope this helps.

You don't need to be a member of TDR to purchase from Geno's
