I'm new to this forum so hello.
I have a 2003 Dodge 3500 5.9 diesel 4 speed auto with 84000 miles on it. I started having a shift problem, when the truck is still cold it shifts fine however sometimes when the truck is up to temp it will have a hard time shifting and you have to run to around 25 mph for the 1 gear shift then when it shifts into 2nd it is around 40 mph and it shifts hard. When it shifts down it also shifts hard when this is happening. If you stop and put into park most of the time it will clear up and shift good. talked to transmission shop they told me that the biggest problem they see with these transmission is a governor that is in transmission. Has any one else had this problem and if so how did you fix it.

Typical governor pressure solenoid problem, THOUSANDS of posts on the same thing. Change out the solenoid and transducer for new OE parts and they go about 40k and start messing up again. If you want a permanent fix there are some after market solutions.

thank you for the help I have am appointment to get them changed that is what the trans shop told me to.

 

is this something you can change out yourself without tearing into anything major?

 

Yes, drop the pan and its right there. A couple wiring connections and a couple bolts and its done. #1 is the transducer, #5 is the solenoid.

 

Takes 5 min. Might as well change the oil and filter while you are at it.

The transducer has 2 functions, for the gov circuit it reads the pressure and gives the ECU feedback to know what its doing to set pressure, the second function is its the temp sensor for the OE pan temp.

The transducer not reading correctly (its as crappy a part as the solenoid) will have the same symptoms as the solenoid going bad. Best practice is to change both to make sure you solved the problem. If changing the solenoid solved the problem, no worries.

 

Mine never takes more than seven qts. of fluid.

 

I use 18 quarts on a service but I drain the TC and run a couple quarts over full all the time.

 

thanks changed solenoid using conversion kit from perf trans .worked great.also disconected return line as sugested pumpted fluid out 2/3 quarts at a time total 14 quarts fluid looks great thanks for all yals help.sotex and yes filter to
