Trans. RE 48 failure info..

I have a 2006- CD- SW- RE 48- 2500 with 20k.. here are the symptons I had and what the trans tech found out today.. This last weekend I hauled my 11k lbs. FW up in the mountains and dropped it off. About a 150 mile trip up hill all the way. Last 12 miles on twisting; slow moving dirt roads. I was monitoring the trans oil temp especially up the more severe grades. I have installed temperature probes both in the oil cooler line out and the line coming back from the air to oil cooler. The hottest it ever got was 191 degrs.. out and 170 degrs.. back in. And that was going up a pretty acute grade with ambient around 63 degrs.. Always about a 20 degree delta in and out. When we got to our camp spot did some backing in manuvering and temp got adround 200. had absolutely no signs of tranny problems what so ever during the pull up. The truck sat for about two days without moving.
HOWEVER when I left and started down the 12 mile up and down washboard road I thought I noticed the trans not shifting right; but couldn't tell. Not until I got to the main highway and started out. The trans would go from first to second, then almost reline the engine rpms. If I let up on the throttle just a tade it would then shift into drive and over drive. Got worse as I went down the mountains. Today I took it to my local dealership and the service manager took me back to work and was able then to really know what was going on.
The SM was really cool I got me in first priority so I can hopefully get the truck back by this weekend. Well I forgot to get my garage door opener and house keys from the truck and went back to the dealership to get them at lunch time and was lucky enough to be able to talk with the tech. He found that the 2nd. speed clamping band was just getting ready to peel off the lining and was charred from heat and was caught just in time from doing anymore damage. He showed me the parts and we chatted for moment knowing he needed to get rolling on my truck. I asked him if there was anything I was doing wrong towing my rig and he kind of smiled and said no. Then he said look here under my work bench. There was about half dozen bands and drums that were a LOT worse off than mine. Said to keep PROPER band adjustment as much as possible during fluid changes. Fluid changes when pulling heavy loads is real important on RE48's. He siad might get my truck back in the morning if all goes well with parts and such. So far so good. To bad a trans has to have problems after just 20k miles!! Hope this little rant here may help some now or in the future. And THANKS for all of you folks info.. that I have learned...

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Your sig does not indicate added power increasing goodies. It is important to keep band adjusted. It is double important if passing more power through tranny. Once you run out of threads on adjsuting stud, the band is worn out.

And to think there are still guys on here that insist not to touch your bands.
IMHO if they shouldn't be touched then they wouldn't have designed them to be adjusted.

Trans. question

I have the same truck and am ready to do the trans. service, how difficult is it to adjust the bands, or are there some directions available here to do it ? I am a 30 yr. plus tech/ engine builder but not alot of A/T experience.

Thanks, Mike Bruns JBRacing.com

Still say the average guy should not touch his bands.....go ahead and adjust away....burn them up. Tech is smart.....he will keep work coming in.

There is a thread on how to adjust. Just check the search section of the forum.
