Trans fluid circulation???
I know they sell them, but I don't have the free money to buy a converter and valve body right now . . . so I was scheming for a possible DIY mod to simply get the fluid flowing until I can spring for the whole deal.
Hi guys,
New here and new to diesel. Are you talking the 48RE Trans? If so, I'm assuming what you are saying is that one can be fried if left in park too long with motor running??? What, is it better to leave it in gear on short stops when motor is on? TIA

I believe it circulates fluid in neutral. Whatever you do, DO NOT leave it in gear while unattended!
The stock 48RE does not circulate fluid in park. Running in park too long starves the pump of fluid and cooling. Put it in neutral and set the parking brake for stops of more than a couple of minutes.

FYI: The trans does not circulate in reverse. If you are backing a heavy load uphill and the trans temp light comes on. Stop and shift to netural and set the brake and wait while the temps cool.
Note: While backing you are not watching your guages ( hopefully you are looking back) just beware that the trans can heat up.

Nope, only the ones based on the old Torque Flight design. All the newer car/SUV/light truck autos are computer shifted and circulate in park. The 48RE was the last of the dinos that was not modernized. That ended in Jan 07 along with the 5.9, may it RIP.
Some mis-info going on in this thread.
Look at the hydraulic charts. "Park" is the only gear range that doesn't charge the converter or cooler circuit. Fluid always moves through the pump (and is lubricated) if the engine is running.
Just buy a shift kit. The instructions for modification are in the kit. Like this one:

It also helps to keep the tranny cooler if you back up in 4 low if you have a 4x4.

Then quite spreading the mis-info around.
Look at the charts again, TC 0 pressure, cooler 0 pressure, line pressure 10-20 lbs. Line pressure is a closed loop in park, nothing in nothing out. Unless fluid flows thru the TC and cooler flow is zero.
There is less than a pint of fluid in the VB and pump when manual valve is in park position. The only cooling is that little bit and there is no flow to relace it unless the VB is modified.
