Trans or Clutch???
Trans or Clutch???
Ok guys I just recently purchased a 2007 5.9L 4X4 Cummins and I am so scared about the transmission giving me problems bc thats ALL I hear!!! Before I put a programmer on it should I upgrade the clutched (if so what do I upgrade to), or do I do whatever it is that everyone is calling a transmission mod??? Be patient with me guys I am a newbie to the Diesel world and I dont know anything!!!
Im running a mild Tuner that adds 100Hp to 325 HO engine and a couple 100 ft lbs of torque,,,, it picked up my mileage a bit and lowered my EGT's when towing 15K toy hauler,,,, the stock clutch is holding up fine,,,,
I hear if you go much above 500+ HP with Mods you will be upgrading the clutch,,,,
You could probably go with the Smarty Jr, or an MP8 like mine and get away with the Stock OEM dual mass setup,,, if you can drive with some common sense

Thats the problem,,,,,,,, when you mash on the accelerator,,, the sense seems to get less common,,,,, and more Rare!!!!!! If you catch my Drift???
Good luck!!!!!!

When I replaced my stock clutch, I called south bend clutch. They are a good group of people. I believe I talked to a guy named Mancil????? Just make sure you update your hydraulics.
I am having some trouble with my clutch, I will have to give hime a call back soon.

Welcome to the forum. No one here should ever dog ya. If they do, just ignore them. You will get more info here than anywhere else.
Fill out signature with all the bells and whistles. Some guys even have their interior colors in there. It helps us eliminate and compare problems.
Assuming you have a stick. The tranny mod is for autos. The stock G56, reverse is down and left, goes two directions. Added power to 100 hp. and it slips like it's greased. Or it holds fine. Either way the clutch and flywheel are the only trouble spots you'll have until 700 to 1000 hp. Then the case likes to come apart. Check with the pullers.
I have a Smarty Jr. and mine slipped like crazy on 3. On two and a sensible foot, it was fine. A week later, the Southbend COFe was in. And back to 3.
Recomendation, settle on a programmer, see what happens, and go from there. The tranny won't blow up before it slips. But you will put a clutch in if you continue to slip it over time.
The programmer issue is huge on here. I voted Smarty Jr. Only after reading almost all this forum had to offer on the topic. Lots of decisions depending on your goals. But be realistic. How much are you going to spend. That should read how many thousands are you willing to part with. Then buy big enough to grow. That applies to all parts.
Ha ha, welcome to the addiction. Ask away. There is no shortage of opinions here!
