tranny temp?

hey guys i just put on a set of gauges last night and was wondering what tranny temps should be on a stock 48re? I ran freeway at 65 mph and my temps where 160ish thats off the hotline. does that sound bout right? thanks

Mine usually runs 20(+/-5) less than coolant temp, about 175F. A tad closer to coolant temp if running with a nose cover.

Yeh my OEM tranny ran about that or cooler for daily driving. Alot less with built barely see over 125 ish towing 165 ish

What were the outside temps and how long did you drive on the highway? Where is the probe located?

My 05 has the sensor in the output line. The temperature will vary according to the driving circumstances. It will change quickly in the output line.

Normal freeway driving...about 70 degrees above the ambient temp.
Slow bumper to bumper creep with stop and go...200 in really hot weather.
Backing up and positioning a trailer in a campsite 200+

As long as the torque converter is unlocked you will see spikes in temperature. If you are towing uphill try to put the selector in 2nd with tow/haul on and keep the speed above 30 or so and the torque converter locks. Temps will not be more than 180/190. Slow down or let the torque converter unlock and you will see 220+.

Don't be alarmed when you see spikes in temperature but with sustained temperatures above 220 you need to change driving technique. Never pull over and stop when towing uphill unless absolutely necessary! Try to crest the hill and keep moving a few miles to let the transmission cool down before stopping. Also remember on the 48RE it does not pump fluid through the coolers when in Park. So if you pull over to let it cool with the selector in Park it will not be able to cool down. Leave it in Neutral with the parking brake on. Fluid will circulate and things cool down.

....and 220-240 is a walk in the park for ATF+4. trans temp light will come on at 280 and goes back off when 230 or less is achieved FYI.

OK, I'll bite! If the ambient temp is 25F, how can your tranny only be at 95F?

when its 25 degrees out the tranny temp gauge doesnt even move and the guage starts at 100

Here is the other end of it. When its 90+ outside down here, 195 to 200 is normal before I changed the torque converter. 15 degrees cooler. In cooler weather 55 to 75 it would run in the 160 to 175.

Never seen no 25 degree stuff.

Interesting....how are you guys tapping the hot (from trans) cooler line? I'm starting to think my Mag-tech pan sending unit position might not be as accurate as I thought! My trans is stock and normal driving I see 100 - 110 deg. A shade more with the 5er. Gauge starts at 100.... Thanks

I'm reading my tranny temp thru the Bully Dog G/T. Since that is off the OBD port, it's whatever the ECU is seeing too.
