Tranny slip

How many of you have had your auto tranny slip on you. I was getting on it kind of hard from about 20 mph and the motor reved, I let off a little and then it caught. Should I have it looked at or just start saving 4500 bucks for a good tranny?

Thanks! Usta

when this happened, was the engine/trans up to operating temp? i know mine fells like it is when it's cold but i think it's just the turbo catching up. i have a quad std box and haven't had the trans slip on me yet. does this happen constantly?

It is not turbo lag. The engine reved and I let up and it caught hold. I am pretty sure it was tranny.

Your description sounds like transmission clutch slippage. With the 04.5 and newer transmissions you really do not have to spend the big bucks to get a good transmission. There are two weaknesses, the torque converter and the clutch disks. Stop by a local off road center, and find who in your area is building the transmissions for rock crawlers and mud boggers. Then go have a chat.

What you want is new clutches with real frictions, not the OEM paper frictions, and a good torque converter. If you get this work done before the transmission eats the old parts, the cost should be closer to $1,500.

The stock internal clutch packs have been tested over 600hp. What you need is a converter and then a valve body to increase the holding pressure of the stock clutches. The chance that it was your tranny clutches is very very slim. I would say it is your converter that you feel slipping.

Oh and I only have 10,000 miles on it. Thought I would throw that in. So it sounds like I should start a slush fund and start working on that 4500 bucks.

Thanks! Usta
