Tranny problem??

I've got some strange issues with the auto tranny in my recently purchased '05 2500 CTD.

The problem occurs only when I drive it for awhile, then park it long enough to cool down a little (such as going into a restaurant to eat). Once I get back in it, it's really hesitant to shift, especially the 1-2 shift. It will just tool along forever in first gear. If I kind of hammer the throttle, it will shift. Once it warms back up (seemingly), it acts just fine. It's also fine starting up from sitting overnight, and just driving around. It seems like it's ONLY if I let it sit for a little while.

The truck is bone stock, and I've checked the tranny fluid level (in neutral w/parking brake on), and it was a little low. I added around 1/2 quart to bring it up to spec. Funny thing is that it ALWAYS shifts just fine at full throttle. It's only the aforementioned part throttle problems I'm seeing. The truck isn't under warranty, so I'm really hoping it isn't something major starting to fail in the tranny. I could live with having to replace a sensor or solenoid or something. Replacing/rebuilding the tranny would be a major issue for me right now (especially after just buying the truck).

Any suggestions from the more experienced diesel guys in here?

DRIVE IT WIDE OPEN ALL THE TIME!!!

No seriously, probably need a valve body, and check the electronics in the tranny.

How many miles you got on it? Don't forget the 05' models still have the 7yr - 70k mile powertrain warranty.

Did EVERYONE get the 7/70 powertrain warranty? My warranty book (the one that accompanies the owner's manual) seems to state only the standard 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty. The dealer where I bought it seemed to be under the same impression. The truck has 37K miles on it right now.

Maybe I'll visit the local dealership and see if they can look up the warranty status for me.

If you just bought this truck, you may be able to purchase the extended warranty. It may be less expensive than a tranny AND give you some other coverages for a while. A few years ago I bought a used Dodge van and I went to my nearest dealer to check about buying the extended warranty. I was like you, a couple K beyond the original one, because I was so close to the original one, they let me pick up the extended warranty that the original owner did not, something about a grace period. I do not know if they still do this, but it would sure be worth it if they would. Leave your tranny questions for later since it seems OK under all other conditions. You also might want to change the fluid, sometimes that makes a little difference.

As far as I know, all 2005 models have the 7/70 powertrain.
