Traction Bars Pics

Here are some pics of the traction bars that I made up.They are 1 1/4 inch sch. 40 pipe. The brackets are home made from some scrap box steel. The end joints are top links with 5/8 inch holes that I bought at Tractor Supply. All hardware is Grade 8.All brackets are bolted on.I did not want to weld anything to the frame. After drilling the frame I noticed that it is thinner than you might think.I don't plan on doing any pulling with these they are only to control WHEEL HOP going up my gravel driveway and in the snow. All materials cost less than $80.00.Lots of labor though.

Is there any structural danger with drilling through these frames? I wanted to make a set of bars myself just like yours I just was leary about drilling in the frame.

Sweet bars just like I want to do!

looks good, but seems like your heims should screw in more, judging by this pic but its too far to see for sure.

I set the brackets so that I would have enough adjustment for preload. Before preload there was about 4-5 threads showing on each end. There is about 4 inches of thread within the tube.

When tightening the nuts on the inside of frame I could feel the metal squeezing a little.I think I will fab up a square piece with the two holes to replace the washers and nuts.

Nice looking project. The big question on my mind is DID THEY WORK? The wheel hop on my truck drives me crazy sometimes!

Yea you are not supposed to drill holesin these frames because it takes away from other "crush zones". Holes in these frames are put there so when you wreck those holes collapse (spelling) together. So when you drill a hole it becomes a crush zone taking away from the others, so there is no telling what the frame will do!! So just keep that in mind!

Finally! Someone who understands the value of pics in a thread

One of the trailer hitches I was looking at includes sleeved to install inside the frame to keep it from crushing. Maybe drill the back hole larger so you could slip in a piece of tubing inside?

I haven't really notices wheel hop on my CTD yet, but it's stock and I don't drive it hard.

The way we do it when we have to mount parts on a rock crawler is to drill the holes bigger and sleeve the frame with a piece of tubing or pipe with the correct size i.d. for the bolt that is to be used and weld it in place. If you do not do that over time the hole will oblong out. Nice work but both the frame and rear end mounts look like "rock anchors" to me. This is just my opinion and knowledge from many years of four wheeling.

IMO it was the lesser of the two evils to drill 4 - 1/2 inch holes in the frame rather than weld them on.The bolt on brackets can easily be taken off.

i totally agree with you cause if you welded the plates you take a chance of warping and weakening the frame. I was just letting you know what i was taught in the frame classes i was sent to for my job. I would prolly do the same thing you did.
