Can someone tell me what torque management is. I've heard reference to it when talking about the Cummins. From what I can tell is that its some sort of programming in the PCM that detects if you are under load and adjusts the torque output of the engine accordingly.

I'm gonna guess that it refers to the ecm limiting the torque output of the engine to protect the transmission. DC did the same thing in the srt-4, because they felt the transaxle in those cars would not be reliable enough with more than 250 ft/lbs of torque. So, they set up the programming such that the engine does not make the torque it would naturally make at certain engine speeds, since the "naturally occurring" torque at those speeds might damage something.

 

It electronically limits torque to automatic transmissions just prior to the transmission shifting to the next higher gear in order to produce a smoother shift, and increasing the life of the transmission. That's why it feels like a vehicle with an A/T "falls on its face" before it shifts. Some power programmers limit or altogether eliminate torque management in their products to get quicker times. It produces a crisper, quicker shift in the automatic transmissions, and some liken it to installing a shift kit in their transmission.

I am not sure. I think Hypertech, Predator... I had a Wester's PCM on my Z71 and he eliminated the TM. I am sure there are many more on this board who know a lot more about programmers/chips and torque management than me.
