Titanium in oil sample
Just got back my report. All numbers normal according to years of sample reports except titanium is 18 ppm and iron is 22 ppm. Only change made to the motor is a new turbo install and oil was change at the time. The sampled oil had about 7500miles/250 hours on it run over the winter season. Question is where is titanium coming from? Valve seat or the shaft of the new turbo?

Could be normal, in your oil.

Titanium is a newer, more environmentally friendly anti-wear additive being implemented due to more stringent emissions regulations, and is phasing out the older, more harmful phosphorous compounds such as ZDDP (Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate). ZDDP reduces the effectiveness of the catalysts in catalytic converters by creating a plating effect when combusted, and covering the catalyst while Titanium does not. Titanium chemically binds to wear surfaces creating a hard, Titanium based oxide layer which reduces friction, thereby reducing wear. Concentration levels vary greatly depending on oil brand.

Thanks for replying. The oil I'm using is valvoline PBS 15w40 as always? Has valvoline started adding titanium? Do the valves or seats on my motor use titanium or any metal in the motor for that matter? Can't find the answer.

I just received my new oil analysis from Blackstone. Titanium is at 28 ppm again. I think its an oil additive as was stated before from "Bob the oil guy" article.Blackstone said my engine is doing great and they are not concerned and I am not either. Maybe you could email Valvoline to see if they use that additive.I think you are OK.

i use shell rotella 15w40 because it was my understanding it had higher zinc levels.
but as others have said they may have to take the zinc levels down due to epa rules.
my old dodge and fergy tractor run great on shell rotella
