time to change ATF & filter, some ?s

Just wondering how the dealerships go about changing the fluid and trans filters. I've heard they just drop the pan, change the filter and add the few quarts of whatever that comes out with the pan. Or do they actually flush the whole system as well? What I'm getting at is what is the proper procedure? I figure just draining a few quarts and changing the filter would be a waste. How much does the whole system hold? I'll be switching to synthetic ATF in the trans and transfer case, so I want to do it right the first time. Thanks.

I believe that you already have synthetic ATF in the trans. If I remember correctly its' Mopar ATF 4+ which is synthetic. You will have to look in the owner's book to make sure. Even if it isn't synthetic in there, the couple of qts that are left will not make a big difference. I would just drop the pan, change the filter & add your favorite brand of synthetic ATF (I prefer Amsoil)
