Have to ask what the heck is the Tony Stewart Air Box??

Eight of us going, and I'm the only one with more truck than 1/2 ton extended cab short box. Went last spring and had a blast, decided to try Snake Hunt. It's right around 8 hrs from here. The Tony Stewart Airbox is a joke, Bama was pickin on me in chat one night. Something about having a Home Depot airbox, I must be a Tony Stewart fan. It's just a stock air box I've taken a hole saw to. Generally referred to as a "Home Depot airbox". If you do it to yours, be careful when cutting the holes close to the fender, the air conditioner hard lines run right underneath the airbox, don't want to hit those with the saw running full speed.
Edit: I see you have a modified airbox in your sig, I'm sure you noticed that already.

Well, 75-80mph is beyond the VE of your engine.
My rig get's it best empty and loaded mileage at 1800-1900rpm regardless of whether it is in 5th or 6th gear.
At 18-1900 rpm on the interstate I can see almost 21 mpg hand calculated. run that over 2000-2100rpm and it goes down to 20mpg, run it above 2100-2200 and I am around 19.5mpg, 2200 19mph and I really havent gone much faster than that
.
I am running 3.73 gears and 31" tall tires; basic stock rig, no mods.
But loaded the new 24v cummins really starts making power. Big turbo, big exhaust, a free breathing cylinder head = moving a lot of air. To compensate for the lots of air moving, you need to burn a lot a fuel. Add to that any mods and you'll burn more fuel loaded.
Must pay to play.

Came back from snowmobiling trip up north a few weeks ago and averaged 16 mpg at 78mph in lifted truck, if I keep it at 60 to 65 truck will get 20mpg. Excessive speed will kill your fuel mileage greatly. Also areodynamcis at 75 or 80 can't be good especially in a truck with nine inches of lift. But it sure looks good going down the highway. Forgot to mention truck was not pulling trailer just had 1000lbs of payload.
I am getting 11-12 mpg with my 03 dually while towing. This is pulling a 30ft gooseneck (9000lbs) with a dozer (16000lbs). I do this moving from job site to job site. Most of these trips are under 100 miles one way. No mountains around here, but the road ain't exactly flat either. Hearing about your mileage makes me feel a little better about mine.

Just got back from a trip. Chicago, IL to Wellington, FL. 2,965 miles round trip. Used only 5 1/4 tanks of fuel for the whole trip. Lowest mileage was 19.5 for one tank and the highest was 20.6. These figures are hand calculated. I was getting between 560-600 miles per tank. And I do not have the vent kit installed yet. Kept the cruise set at about 70 and just drove. I was not towing on this trip. Mileage didn't vary at all even changing the Juice w/Attitude levels. I think the real reason for my milage jump was that I just started using the Power Service/MMO combo that has been talked about here. The best I had ever gotten prior to this was 17.5.
On the way down, I averaged 10.9 fighting a 20-30 mph headwind all the way to Wichita. Ran 5 over the entire time. Return trip got 14 with a 5-10 mph tailwind. I just set the cruise and ran with the exception of the KC area, traffic there forbids it, and I stop on the Missouri side for fuel due to higher taxes in Kansas. The trailer we were pulling was a rather brick like 6x12 enclosed, with 5 bikes and gear for 6 guys to camp and ride for 5 days. Was also running Diesel Kleen in the fuel.

Dad's got the v-10 in an 03 dually, gets 4.5-6.8 mpg when pullin 16,500 at 50mph because it won't fo any faster. OUCH !!!!! He's got 43,000 miles on it and it just ov er a year old. Just think of what his monthly gas bill is. Makes my cheeks pucker
I tow a 25' Hornet 5th and 16' Lund Aluminum boat behind that- worst mileage was 14 and that was doing 70- if I run around 60 mileage stays about 18 or 19- naked, the truck itself gets 23 to 24 at 60-65 and drops dramatically to 17 or 19 above 70-- only use PS additive in winter to prevent gel-- I'd be concerned if the mileage dropped below 12 when towing since I have a buddy that pulls a 37' 5th with the same year truck and gets 14 to 15 with his lead foot
Just went 200 miles up 93 north New Hampshire empty and got 18 mpg hand calculated, way back with 9000lb TT 12 mpg. Some mountain and little wind. 4.10 gears.I am very happy with these numbers. Last truck got 4-6 mpg with same trailer. I love towing with this truck.

Hey Wyattdog, for info on the PS/MMO combo do a search. Much has been posted about it. 45auto is the real expert on the subject. I run 12oz of PS( silver bottle ) and 4oz MMO per fill up. Works for me. My overhead right now is reading 18.4 and it's usually 1-2mpg low. With the high fuel prices, I'm happier than a hog in s___ with those numbers.
Really though, I'm just a fortunate diesel head who was reading posts when I found out about this combo. Thanks again to 45auto and the others!!!!!
