Is that on the overhead or hand calc? Regardless, if its not idling all day then something is up. Have you checked to see if you oil level is rising from injector stuck open dumping fuel?

How are you using the truck? Slow crawl, lots of idling? Normal MPG then. If you consistently are going 30-45 MPH and getting that, then I say you definately have an issue. Any smoke? I'd check the oil as stated above.

it is not idling very much it is just going down the road slow for a few miles, stopping opening the gate and then going again. It is cold here but not extreme.

You may want to take the truck out on the open road. Diesels need to get up to temperature. If I put around town in the winter too much the truck tends to idle slightly rougher and mileage creeps down a little. We have a place 200 miles away we go on the weekends and take the truck there a few times to "stretch it's legs". I hope that's all you need to do and not something like injectors.

"haybed with feeder" Hummm, That sort of implies it putters around the farm, through gates, never gets fully warmed up, constantantlly at max charge rate to keep batteries up, fairly heavy load, pokes around in mud, runs good, is underestimating level of use. About 6.1035 MPG is my estimate of good for it's use. JMHO of course..
