Taking oil sample ?
Taking oil sample ?
I'm not ready to drain my oil but I want to get an oil sample. They say take the sample after you drain 1/2 the oil out. I have a Fumoto quick drain plug so can I just get the truck to operating temp & right after I turn it off get a sample before ALL the junk settles into the pan? TIA
My AMSOIL and blackstone pumps never worked for the dipstick trick. LOL But I take mine after the truck is up to running temp when I pull the drain plug. I let it drain a few quarts and then stick just the edge of the collection bottle into the stream. THat way it fills slowly and does not splatter or burn my hands..
This has worked for me. I have been trying to send a sample after 4k miles on the oil to keep the reports consistant. This is a post I did a while back.
I got the pump from Blackstone Labs. The pump comes with a 1/4" plastic tube. The 1/4" tubing is too large to fit down the oil dipstick tube. Right at the end of the tube is some sort of rib that stops a larger tube from going any farther. I bought some fittings & smaller tubing to get a sample thru the oil dipstick. With the new 3/16" tube, it went in smooth. I used the components from McMaster-Carr. Here are the items
(1) brass compression 1/4" od tubing 1/4" NPT female #50915K215 $1.87
(2) brass compression 3/16" od tubing 1/4" NPT male #50915K313 $1.87
(3) 3/16"od 1/8" id tubing with Teflon PTFE semi-clear $9.40 for 10 feet #5239K11.
Cut the 3/16" tubing to 60" If I remember right the dipstick was 46.5" long. I wrapped electrical tape around the 3/16 tube to mark insertion length and create a stop plug. Tube didn't crush down, it worked great. The tube was kind of pricey but wanted something stiff that coud take some heat. FYI

I do appreciate yall's advise but I bought the Fumoto drain plug for this exact reason. I don't need to pump it out to get a sample unless the Fumoto is not an effective way of getting a true reading. Do any of yall do it the way I'm describing & does it get you a 'proper' sample? TIA

I take my samples from the fumotovalve. Always turned out fine. But I have only done it at oil change time, which for me is at 5k intervals. I usually drain some off (maybe a gallon), stop the flow, get my blackstone sample bottle, then fill up the sample bottle with a slow trickle from the fv, then put on the lid, and reopen the fv for the rest of the oil drain. Hope that helps.
But I have never tried to get a sample in between changes. I guess it would work fine though.
