Tail Shaft housing boot Help???
Tail Shaft housing boot Help???
I've been leacking fluid from my tailshaft housing boot. I don't know why it started leaking after I replaced the u joints in my d-shaft. WHat do I need to replace to fix leak and how hard is it? Should I change My t-case oil as well? If so What is the process and how much fluid?

STANDARD PROCEDURE - FLUID DRAIN AND REFILL
The fill (1) and drain (2) plugs are both in the rear
case.
1. Raise vehicle.
2. Position drain pan under transfer case.
NOTE: It may be necessary to remove the exhaust
y-pipe at the exhaust manifold to properly access
the fill and drain plugs. Lowering the exhaust will
allow the plugs to be accessed for torquing during
installation. (Refer to 11 - EXHAUST SYSTEM/EXHAUST
PIPE - REMOVAL)
3. Remove drain and fill plugs and drain lubricant
completely.
4. Install drain plug. Tighten plug to 41-54 N·m (30-40
ft. lbs.).
5. Remove drain pan.
6. Fill transfer case to bottom edge of fill plug opening
with MoparT ATF +4, Automatic Transmission fluid.
7. Install and tighten fill plug to 41-54 N·m (30-40 ft. lbs.).
8. Install the exhaust y-pipe to the exhaust manifold, if removed. (Refer to 11 - EXHAUST SYSTEM/EXHAUST
PIPE - INSTALLATION)
9. Wipe any excess fluid that may have spilled onto the exhaust.

Not sure if its a dealer only item, check the parts stores I guess. If not, then I think this might be the part.

I have had my 06 Dodge 3500 in the shop many times for a leak, and had a boot replaced and was told this was the problem. ONLY to find out now that they tell me it's the Transmission Tailshaft Housing Leaking and cost to replace is $737 (parts, labor, and tax). I have 63K miles on my 06 and have had it in the shop many times for leaking.
What other options do I have for fixing this problem?

Va.Diesel Please fill out your Signature so everyone knows what your truck is equipped with. Have you crawled under to see exactly where its leaking from? Could still be the seal, maybe your slip joint has a burr or nick, and damages the seal when the DS is re-installed.
