Synthetic Rotella
Synthetic Rotella
Is this oil a "true" synthetic?
I am thinking about runnin the 5W40 as aposed to my Delo 400 15W40.
Would this be a step up or down, in protection and performance?
I have sunk some $ into this motor and I am about to sink some more, so I am thinking stepping up to synthetic may be the way to go. The Rotella is priced right an easy to get.
Thanks

The reason it's priced right is that it's a Group 3 "synthetic" - a highly refined hydrocarbon base stock. The more expensive synthetics are Group 4 (PAO, or polyalphaolefin base stock) or, rarely, Group 5 (ester base stock).

No Rotella synthetic 5w40 oil it is not a True Synthetic oil but it is a step above regular Rotella. If you want true synthetic oil then you need to use either Redline or Amsoil. I plan on switching to Amsoil 5w30 HDD on my next oil change. Also Amsoil is now making a new 5w40 CJ-4 oil that can be use in our trucks but if you want to go to extended drain intervals then you must do UOA.
Good info guys. I change my oil often, probably too often so I dont really want to shell out the amount of $ it would take to run Amsoil. The main reason I am considering synthetic is reall just because it wont burn off as easy under high heat conditions.
Good post! Gotta LOVE Mobil 1.

I'm not aware of other Group 5 diesel oils in the consumer market. That's not to say there aren't any - just that I'm not aware of them.
Esters have their pluses and minuses, just as PAOs and alkylated naphthalene (another Group 5 constituent) do. As an example, Mobil 1's Tri-Synthetic formula (mistakenly claimed by some to be a switch to Group 3 base stock) is actually a blend of these three (thus, the tri) Group 4 and 5 synthetics that is designed to take advantage of the beneficial characteristics of each.

I just use regular good ol' ROTELLA....Change it every 4000 miles and have a good place that does it for me for $55.00 OTD including the filter. With all the semi's on the road running millions of miles a year, most use ROTELLA and swear by it.
I have not problem with good ol rotella or delo 400. my concern is that the more hp I make the more heat I make and synthetic oils have a higher burn off point than dino. That is really the only reason I am looking into it. To my knowledge most any oil gets dirty before it "wears out". But obviously I am no oil guru or I would know the answer to my question.
So even though the rotella syn is a group 3 it is still a better oil than rotella dino, correct?
