Which synthetic oil to use?

I just recently purchased an 05 CTD and would like to know what synthetic oils are good and what weights people are using. Also would like to know what mileage is safe to go from dino to synthetic.

Mobil 1 Truck & SUV (5W-40 I believe) is probably one of the best. There are other goods one too but I haven't tried them.

As far as when to switch, the Cummins website has this to say:

Cummins recommends that you not use synthetic motor oil during the break-in period of 5000-20,000 miles, based on the type of driving, to allow proper seating of the piston rings. Beyond that mileage it is OK to use synthetic oil.

Mobil Delvac 1300 and Chevron Delo 400 are some good dino oils...can usually get them at Wal-Mart cheap.

Shell Rotella T and Rotella T Synthetic seem to be pretty popular too...and you can usually find them anywhere.

My personal preference is Mobil 1300 Super (15W-40), available at Wally World for about $6 per gallon.

Rotella T and Delo 400 are both pretty popular and probably a few others that I'm not thinking of right now.

Valvoline Premium Blue, Pennzoil Long Life, and several others. I think Texaco makes a CI-4 rated oil too now.

Since the 05's create more soot that goes into the oil I would recommend the CI-4 plus (CI-4+) if your going non synthetic. The above mentioned oils usually are CI-4 plus unless they have some old stock they are trying to sell.

Mobil 1 Truck & Suv 5w40 is the only oil we use in our trucks. Make sure you get around 6,000 miles on it before ya switch.

as soon as you have pulled a trailer 50 or more miles with 8,000 or more you can switch to a synthetic its for the guys who never hitch to anything that need to go 5 to 20 thousand before switching

When you do change to synthetic, if you do, go with Amsoil 15w40. I have been running this from 15,000, and now have 60,000 on my 03. I kid you not, my oil right now with 7500 miles on it, is as clear as honey. I will send pics, most people don't believe me. BTW I am not even an Amsoil dealer!

one way,
The 03's were the cleanest running engines, you could run any oil and acheive the same results.

Rotella Synthetic here, first time in the crank case after 30k miles. Rotella Syn even ended up in the TDI VW Bug crank case at the same time. If it's good for one, it must be good for all, Wally world has the best price around me.

I started using Amsoil 15-40, I plan to change the oil every 10K and the filter(Fleetguard) every 5K.
