Synthetic oil bad for CR??

I have a friend that took his truck to a well known diesel shop from our area and the owner says that running synthetic oil in the CR motor is not good. He says stick to regular. I am inclined to disagree, but want to hear what you all think.

I run conventional oil in the spring and summer and synthetic oil in the fall and winter.

I've done this for over 60k miles and I've never had any issue with running synthetic oil.

I use Premium Blue Extreme. Its the oil with the Cummins "C" right on the bottle. Why would Cummins develop/endorse a synthetic oil that can't be used in thier engines.

That is good to know. Right now I am running 15w40 Rotella, but on my last 2 trucks I ran 5W40 Rotella synthetic due to cold temps. I think once my new one is broken in I am going to switch.

Considering that all the additives being used in oils are all synthetics, all oil has a percentage of them to begin with . . your friend needs a little education to say the least.

OTR carriers have been using synthetics in every diesel engine out there since it's inception . . proven to be worthwhile or they would have not used it.

The Valvoline Premium Blue designed and recommended by Cummins for our truck contains a TON of synthetic ingredients . .

If you really want to know a lot more about motor oil and other fluids, check out www.bobistheoilguy.com/ that should enlighten you more than you ever wanted to be enlightened . . send you 'mechanic' there as well, then you can have an intellignet conversation with him.

ive been adiesel tech for some years and got a buddy who works for cats marine diesel side on yachts he said you dont wanna run synthetic oil in boats because of the high sulfur content of the diesel fuel at some marines in places like puerto rico or even the bahamas it causes the bearings to etch, due to the sulfur mixing with the oil and creating sulfuric acid. this can also be said for older heavy equipment with worn engines youd wanna stick with regular oil a non synthetic oil. but for otr trucks there is nothing to worry about i run synthetic in my truck its a down rite better product! hope that i helped someone out.

Define what a synthetic oil really is then go from there.

I use to think synthetic oil was manufactured from mad scientists in a lab starting from scratch using animal fats or peanut oil. In reality they use base stocks from things such as Albertas Oil Sands or extraction from coal.

In using Oil Sands or coal they can get a much more consistant base stock that is more stable. This is only true if the product that is processed is directly from these sources. Not mixed with others from differnet fields.

Many of your major suppliers of conventional oils also draw from these same areas for their products but they may be using a mixed batch hence why they call it semi synthetic.

Next time you shell out your hard earned money for a high end Synthetic think about where the oil come from to make it. Then think about the additive package in it. The additives are the difference.

Not about synthetics-- ignorant about engines in general, it appears.

Fuel system has no bearing on whether or not a synthetic is "safe" to use.

I can't believe after all these years, there is still so much mis/dis-information out there on synthetics.
