I'm going to change the brake fluid when I replace the front brake pads. Advance auto parts only carries Synthetic DOT 3 brake fluid. I was wondering that if we suck all the fluid from the master Cylinder and then pump bleed at each wheel till the new fluid comes out will we get enough of the old out. The bottle does not say if the synthetic is compatable with old style. But being thats all they have figure it is. What expirience have you all had.

 

If you are going to flush the brake fluid, you will need a DRB scan tool to bleed the air out of the ABS system. The DRB scan tool cycles the the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit Pump and solenoids to get the air out of the system.

To bleed an ABS you would bleed the system using the standard bleeding proceedure, then cycle the ABS system with the DRB scan tool, then bleed the system one last time.

I guess you could just bleed a lot of fluid out of the entire system(never letting the fluid drop by more than halfway), and that probably would have the same effect of flushing it.

 

If it's DoT3, it's compatible with glycol/non-synthetic based 3's. Just stay away from the silicone DoT5 stuff.

 

Thanks I figured that it would be compatible with regular DOT 3. I'm going to not full empty the MS reservour so air does not get in the system. I will just take most out fill it and do a pump bleed to get the new fluid thru the abs manifold to each wheel. Thats what we did 2 vears ago and it's worked fine.

A mity-vac hand pump is worth the price. Then you can have an assistant keep the MS full, while you draw fluid from each bleeder until you get clean fluid.

 

FWIW...Not sure how well it would work in a truck but had friend swear that it was easier to push brake fluid from the bleeder to the master cylinder on his motorcycles. He used one of the giant syringes they sell at farm stores. A piece of tubing clamped on the end of the syringe and clamped on the nipple then push the fluid through. Less chance or getting air in in the line. Just have to keep removing fluid from the master cylinder.

 

I use the Motive Power Bleeder. Works great.

Done the brakes this morning. My uncle helped. We opened the bleeder with an atached hose to a bucket and pressed the calipers in, closed the bleeder and replaced the pads then pump bleed at all 4 wheels till clean fluid came out. I used wagner thermoquiet pads. the stop the truck quick and smooth. Thanks for the posts!
