Are you wanting a synthetic/dino blend or a pure synthetic??

From the topic title I think it's pretty clear that he's looking for a blend..

I wasn't aware of mobil making any diesel specific synthetic blend oil.

Schaeffer's might have a blended diesel oil - try the bob is the oil guy forums..

IMO synthetic blends are a waste of time - fork over the dough and get the real deal.

With all respect, if it were obvious to me, I wouldn't have asked. I agree - I don't understand why someone would really want a synthetic/dino blend - that's why I questioned it, but to each his/her own.....

Exxon does, something like XD-3 Elite, and while it seems to be available in Canada it's harder to find than hen's teeth in the US. I used it for a few changes starting at 15k miles and it seemed to make a slighty quieter engine.

continuing.... since I can't get it anymore I make my own blend of 2 gallons of Delvac 1300 and 4 qts of Mobil 1 Truck & SUV, a 5W-40 synthetic. I like using a synthetic as it seems to make for a bit quieter engine, it'll make for a bit better starts in colder weather, it'll provide a bit better protection in hotter weather, and it seems to clean better than straight dino. I won't run 100% synthetic as I'm not a big fan of extended oil changes, even Cummins states that you can't extend oil changes just because you're using synthetic, so I'm not going to dump 3 gallons of synthetic every 3750 miles. I also use a Mobil 10W-30 and Mobil 1 T&S blend in both cars.

Why would anyone want to run 100% synthetic ? :^)

LOL I knew 1sttruck would reply with his concoction of motor oils Your statement that you can't extend oil changes with synthetic isn't exactly accurate. Synthetics will resist acidity more, and maintain their TBN much longer than a dino in the same scenario. The only instance that synthetic won't last longer than dino is if you have a really sooty (read heavily overfueled) engine, and the soot buildup mandates an oil change. That being said - soot is pretty much a non-issue with 3rd gens. Another reason people want to run full synthetics is cold weather protection, as you had mentioned. Dino oil simply doesn't flow as well or protect as well in extreme cold (below 10F). Some of us want to improve the factors you listed more than 'a bit' , and some of us generally just like the most protection possible whether we need it or not

Rusty - I knew it wasn't obvious to you, but it was to the rest of us, that's why I took that little stab at ya I forgot to add the in my earlier post.

cummins must of changed their oil change interval requirements from 03 to 04. my manual says to change the oil at 7500 miles intervals for schedule b and 15000 miles for schedule a. i don't see anything about changing the oil at 3750 miles

The 03 CARB engines need a 3750 oil change interval, evidently because they generate more soot than the non-CARB engines. The 600 engines also seem to generate more soot, see another thread in this forum on the subject. In addition to soot one needs to be concerned with particles, smaller ones evidently being responsible for most wear, and again synthetics won't do any better than dino when dealing particles. When I mentioned 'can't extend your oil changes' I meant per Cummins recommendations in order to comply with warranty, as obviously anyone is free to do what they want regarding oil choice and change interval. .
