Submit your stupid and expensive mistakes. Heres mine.
[QUOTE=Cold Diesel;1881354]Probably should not admit to this but.....[QUOTE]

You handled it alot more gracefully than I would have.
I have stupid one but not real expensive. Many years ago I was attempting to stab a distributor in my 302 in my Mustang. For whatever reason I left the key on AND the coil plugged into the distributor. When I got it close to the hole I noticed a pretty little blue spark arcing from the drive gear to the intake manifold. "Thats wierd" I thought. Before I had a chance to think anything else, the distributor was airborne and I had valve cover, intake and oil pan gasket laying everywhere.
Another one...This one is in the "Sometimes Things Go Right" catagory. I have a 71 Roadrunner clone. Came with the 318, I bought it with a 383. Still had the small block K-frame which did not have a sway bar or any way to attach one. I spent a week pulling the motor and swapping the K-frame from a 69 Charger R/T that had a big block and the sway bar attachment. It also had drum brakes, my 71 had discs. I finally got everything back together and was attempting to install the front calipers when I realized that the sway bar bushings would not allow the calipers to seat correctly. The calipers installed in front of the spindles, and so did the sway bar bushings. This was all I had left to do. Now I have the delimma of no front brakes. After several hours of "oh crap", I realized that the spindles were identical and that the trailing arms and caliper brackets were merely bolted to the spindles. After a couple of hours the brakes went from leading the wheel to trailing the wheel. Everything on the right side of the car went on the left side and vice-versa. The car went from handling like an ocean liner to more like a large yacht, but I happy.

So far my worst mistake was thinking that converting from a 5 speed to a 6speed and a double disk clutch would be a good idea. Bought a 6 speed and it ground 3rd gear. sent it out for a rebuild. got it back and it ground some other gear. also this whole time the new double disk dosent shift worth a crap. and while putting the DD in I never got the starter spacer so that was another week the truck was down. gave up on the 6 speed and sent down both the old 5and the 6 for rebuilds. got them back gave thet 6 away (works well in someone elses truck of course) put my 5speed in. all in all the truck was unoperational for 6 months. It still dosent shift worth anything and I'm out over 10000$ I should have just bought another truck!
Blew an injector Christmas eve, had newborn duaghter in the truck, late at night and I couldn't pull over quick enough...Long story short, refer to post #31, truck still down at Industrial Injection having the motor rebuilt, I will let you guys guess the cost!!! All I can say is there is not enough lube out there to take this one in the rear...
Backing up my truck to the fifth wheel parked in my driveway at night - wife sitting next to me. She asks,"Do you want me to go out and drop the tailgate?" I say, "Nah, the tailgate will go under the pinbox - no problem, do it all the time." Truck stops abruptly. The fifth wheel was not parked in its "usual" spot. In its usual spot, the driveway ramps up. Where it was at this time was in a flat spot - so, truck was higher relative to the trailer's pinbox. Result - quarter-sized ding about 1" below top edge of the tailgate. Cost - not so bad ($39 for a tailgate bedcap that hides the dent). Hidden cost = "I TOLD YOU SO!!!!" from my wife.
Actually, she is smart enough not to rub this one in. But, then, there are so many others for her to choose from . . .

Hello,
Cold Diesel, Wow i feel for you.
I took my new 06 down to a friends farm at night due to 3" of ice and several more inches of snow. Wanted to see dead cows and such. Parked next to his cabin that has a steel roof. Next midday the 3" ice sheet had moved about 12" down the roof. So of course I move my truck to the other side of the trail on the adjacent hillside.
Well that night my friend decides to shoot his SKS into the fire pit out in the field and then he later shot onto the hillside. He was a sweat heart and used armor piercing rounds.
Next day about 2PM needed to get something out of the truck. Noticed that one tire was flat. Thought, weight of truck pushed the tire in the snow and then I thought it is mostly ice and now way. Followed my track and did not see anything that could hurt the tire. So I just retrieved my stuff and when I closed the door all the glass blew out. At that point I knew what had happened and begun looking for bullet holes. After each one I found I hoped that I would not find another. Found 5 total. One bullet fragged on the drivers quarter and 2 pieces went into the main wiring loom. Spliced 23 connections in low 20 degree weather and drive home 3 hours. Never did see a dead cow.
Oh and my chain-saw, stihl, by the fire pit was not hurt one bit. What a relief.
