When I added my DrawStraw I needed a piece of, flexible, fuel line to hook up the return line to the tank. I went to my box of left over hoses and used a piece of (green) fuel line that Aircraft Spruce sells for aviation fuel line. The other day I noticed a leak when the motor was running. I figured the return line came off since I had good fuel pressure at the VP. I'm unable to get under the truck so I took it to a local (real good) mechanic. He told me that the aviation hose had deteriorated and was shot. He put a diesel fuel, certified hose on and all is good, but...........When I picked up the truck I drove straight to the local diesel fueling station. (my low fuel light was on) In the process of pumping the tank full, I heard the fuel get into the filler neck and knew I was close to being full. Well, another customer yelled at me to let me know that fuel was pouring out.(about 3 to 5 gallons) Shut the pump off and drove straight back to the mechanic to find out what was off and/or loose. Upon close inspection he noticed that the top of the Draw Straw was up and out of the tank. He couldn't figure out why it would pop out since he never touched it. (it's been in for approx 2 years). With a little brain storming we finally figured out why. As most of you know the bottom of the tank bulges down and when I installed the Draw Straw I allowed enough length on the Straw for the bulge. When the mechanic reinstalled the tank he used a transmission jack which pushed the bulge upwards, thereby pushing the Draw Straw up and out of it's gasket. Mystery solved

Evidently, avaition fuel line is not compatable with diesel fuel.

 

was that gasoline aviation fuel or jet fuel?

I would think that jet fuel( a grade of kerosene) should have been fine..

I would think it was for gasoline type plane motors since Aircraft Spruce sells stuff for small (private type) planes.

 

ah..that makes sense then..would be like using fuel line from gasoline in a diesel..not a good idea.

I had a draw straw crack right at the the top of the tank a year or so back, Always wondered how the heck that happened. I pulled the bed when I installed it, instead of dropping the tank, cause it was full of fuel. I guess there is one advantage of having the tank on the ground when measuring and installing. When I rebuilt it, the tank was almost empty. Guess that's why it didn't happen again. Now I have to go look to see if there is a problem again.
