I have a 2006 2500 with 115,000 miles that looks and runs like new. I will be deploying and putting my truck into storage. I just changed the oil, transmission fluid, fuel filter, and will disconnect the batteries when I drop it off. I was wondering if someone could tell me if there's anything else that I should do. It'll be sitting for 6 months. Should I fill it up and put additives in the tank, or leave it with whatever's left in the tank? Thanks for your help.

 

Go ahead and take the time to remove the batteries from the truck.

 

I would fill it up and put aditive in it. Puting it on Jacks would not hurt eather. Be safe and keep your head down. Come home safe.

+1 on the batteries and jacking it up. If it's outside, try to cover the windows so it doesn't sun bleach the interior. Put a "decon" box under the hood for the rats that might venture under there. It's just good insurance to save your wiring.

 

+1 on the decon idea. Rodents can do massive damage.

I also agree with the fill it with high quality fuel and additive suggestion. It will prevent condensation.

What part of the country will you be storing it in?

If you have access to 110 nearby, you might consider putting a Battery Tender on it. They make a water proof model.

I'd find the nicest, cleanest climate-controlled storage unit that will fit your vehicle. Clean means it doesn't leak, nice means they take care of the place, and climate controlled means you don't have to worry about cold/heat damage. Last deployment I changed all the fluids except diffs/tranny, filled the tank and added sta-bil for diesels, and backed it into the storage unit. Disconnected the batteries, released the parking brake, put it in 1st and walked away for 7 months. When I got home I reconnected the batteries and it fired right up...no problems since.

Thanks for all the input. It'll be stored on base but outdoors. I'm not worried about jacking it up because it's getting new tires as soon as I get back anyway. Thanks again.

 

Why outdoors? If you're deploying, the cost of vehicle storage is covered under the JFTR. TMO will also ship your vehicle to a processing/storage facility where they're stored indoors, under a cover, and moved every two weeks. I can't think of ANY climate where I would be okay with my vehicle stored outside for 6 months.
