stock 48re tranny
stock 48re tranny
i have a 2003 ram 3500 with a stock 48re tranny it has been rebuilt once, on this tranny i have about 200,000 k. it trys to shift into second gear the rpms drop but then it comes back out and into first then if you havent moved your foot on the peddle and is in the same position it will do that over and over again but if you hit the gas and come off it will shift and then it will be fine for the rest of the gears but it will do the same thing next time you get into first gear , fluid is full and the temp of the tranny warms up just like normal and no trouble codes. what part of my tranny is toast ?

Mine's got 246,000 miles and has done that since I got it with 31,000 miles on it. Rebuilt it at 148,000.
No big deal. If you want to crawl under there and change out the transducer and solenoid it's suppose to fix the problem but I've also heard sometimes it doesn't fix the problem permanently. I haven't had any issues so why change it... it just feels weird. If it's cold, it's usually not a problem but after it gets up to temp, that's when I feel it most.
Nothing in the trans is toast, if that's the only problem you feel it has.
Change those parts if you want, counting fluid and all, I think I've seen the cost under $125.

put the BORG pressure T/D... its a much better part.
Heres a link to the place I ordered mine from, havent installed it yet though.. but from what I hear, this is a MUCH better solution than more stock parts.
While you have the pan off, check/adjust the bands as well, you will need an inch lb. torque wrench for that procedure.

Mine stutter shifted like that for a while and ate the front band up. I'd fix it asap, and while you have the pan off drop the valve body and put a shift kit in it. The extra pressure will help the trans last as long as possible.
im ordering an ats tranny but its gonna be 3 weeks to get here then the wait for my guy to put it in so i was just hoping for a hail marry fix im gonna put the pressure solenoid in and the transducer dont need to haul anything but need it to drive to the shop. thanks guys

Just my $.02. I`d go with the oem parts. Search for this fix & you`ll see that the borg unit doesn`t always work. I know I`ll get flack for posting this but it`s just my opinion. If you want to try the borg part, e-mail me or PM & I`ll mail you a new one for free. I tried it on my 06 & it didn`t work.I don`t have any use for it. If you ( or whoever) wants it just let me know what it does in your trans.

It didn`t fix the 1-2 shift & it wouldn`t shift into 3rd unless I let off the gas. I put the OEM back in & it has the 1-2 shuttle but shifts fine into 3rd. I`ve read in more than one post other people having the same problem. The borg part sure looks better but it won`t work in mine.
All these solenoids are Borg Warner so saying a Borg part does not convey anything.
The smaller solenoids have a habit of being bad out of the box. If it doesn't work it is becuase there is something wrong with it. The updated solenoid is only marginally better and there is no real data on how well they are going to last.
Either the OEM or the updated one will work fine but only for about 40k. If you want to fix a majority of the issues then go with the GM style which is also made by Borg Warner.
Don't expect the solenoid to fix the shuttle shift, in a lot of cases it won't. There is a lot more to 1-2 shuttle than simply the solenoid.

wish mine would have... got to almost 20K before it started... idiot dealership had it twice and never even pulled the pan... Finally gave up and jsut started driving it harder to try and keep it from happening.
I'm suffering from the same prob with my 06. Getting ready to do the solenoid and debating which to get. Seems the majority are recommending the GM over the expensive Borg or the stock Dodge. Anyone have part numbers for the parts I need? I plan to replace filter & fluid, ajust bands, and do the solendoid/transducer. That's about the extent that I personally will get into trans work
