first off thanks for all the help

But back to the trouble here's whats up.
It just started to run hot one day. so i have now changed the thermostat, water pump, antifreeze and fan clutch and pulled and cleaned the rad really good but it was clean to start out with but it still runs hot.

It has only done the lose power and smoke thing twice. it 's like it gets something in the injectors or intake and it smokes a grayish-white smoke for 10-20sec and will only run up to 2500 rpms and then back to running fine.

It get hot after it has ran for 5-10min after that it will get hot every time i give it fuel soon as i let off of it it will cool back down to around 200* and stay there all day until i give it fuel again once back in the fuel it runs hot again even if I'm just setting in the drive way and take it up to 2000 rpms and it will start to climb back up. it does have a miss i can hear ever so often in the tail pipe not steady just every few sec (15-20sec) i can't tell if it's losing fluid but it may be really slow if at all i have added some water to it once are twice. there is no sign of oil in water or water in the oil. i'm about to give up. i'm sick of all this. i'm ready to trade it in but it payed for and i don't want a payment plus i just put a lot of money in it with the lift, tires, wheels and new front end i hate to lose all of that money

Have you confirmed the temperatures with some other source then the factory gauge?

no but even if it was this it would be staying at one temp i would think not climbing up and down it goes from 200-225 just setting in the drive way running the motor up. but I'll check it i done every thing else. how do you go about checking it???????????????????????

Try this IR thermometer. It's cheap enough for a one time purchase.

Scan the water outlet from the head, scan around the cylinder head, scan the oil filter adapter - that's water cooled, too!

The temps should be relatively close. Maybe a 5-10F difference.

critter; dumb question, can you hear the fan running? My 07 sounds like a jet engine when it comes on, same with my 04 gas motor. if the fan doesnot come on it will run hot at idle.

Now I dont know if its possable but you might check your belt routing,Some vehicles you can route the belt wrong and it will still fit. (But the water pump will run backwards) its worth a look.

Take it to another one. Or a Cummins shop.

Where do you live? There might be an engine builder around you.

Did you buy an IR thermometer?

If so, what are the temps and where did you read them?
