Yeah I know the tell tale sign is the steering getting heavy as in no ps. But I am hearing this sound and it is driving me crazy. I might have to take some video of it and post it up for a better diagnosis.

When it sounds like there is something loose up there I found it was normally the ball joints going bad. It came from the side specific (driver's side) and was really noticable when I went over bumps... When I got a loud whinning Noise from my Ford's power steering I found the power steering fluid level was low....

I just had the intermediate steering shaft replaced in my 06. The dealer also told me that it was probably ball joints and replaced them first. He said it seems like the Diesels are going through ball joints a lot quicker.

Anyway, after that the rattle was still there, I took it back and told them it was the shaft. I could feel it in the steering wheel and brake pedal though. If you can't feel it in the wheel or pedals, it's probably the ball joints.
